Irish Fencing Heads To Big Apple For Pair Of Weekend Meets

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team heads east to take part in the St. John’s Duals (Jan. 21) and NYU Duals (Jan. 22) in Queens, N.Y., and New York, N.Y., respectively. The pair of events mark the first regular season matches of the year for the women’s team.

Both team’s face an identical schedule of events in Saturday’s action, taking on the likes of Ohio State (10 a.m.), Penn State (11:15 a.m.), Harvard (12:30 p.m.), St. John’s (2:15 p.m.) and Columbia (3:30 p.m.) at the St. John’s Duals. On Sunday, both teams start out with matches against Yale (8 a.m.) and Columbia (9:15 a.m.) at the NYU Duals, before the men take on North Carolina and the women face Northwestern (10:30 a.m.). The men and the women then both conclude with bouts against St. John’s (11:45 a.m.), NYU (1:30 p.m.) and Ohio State (2:45) to wrap up the weekend.

The Irish men enter the weekend ranked fourth nationally in the inaugural CollegeFencing360.com NCAA Coaches Poll, while also carrying a perfect 6-0 record after winning the Western Duals. The women, meanwhile, take to the strip for the first time on the season ranked as the third-best team in the nation.

Competing on the men’s side will be epeeists Albert He, James Kaull, Jack Piasio, Dale Purdy and Michael Rossi, foilists Reggie Bentley, Enzo Castellani, Nicholas Crebs, Grant Hodges and Nickolas Kubik and sabreists Jason Choy, Alexander Coccia, Keith Feldman, Marcel Frenkel and Kevin Hassett. On the women’s side will be epeeists Nicole Ameli, Channing Foster, Phenix Messersmith, Ashley Severson and Diane Zielinski, foilists Rachel Beck, Adriana Camacho, Grace Hartman, Darsie Malynn, Radmila Sarkisova and Madison Zeiss and sabreists Beatriz Almeida, Abigail Nichols, Lian Osier, Kathryn Palazzoto and Marta Stepien.
