Women’s Heat Sheet (Day Three)

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams closed day two of the 2013 BIG EAST Outdoor Championship at Rutgers University with a total of 26 top-eight finishes (scored positions) as five Irish student-athletes captured all-BIG EAST honors. After eight scored events, the women’s team holds a 3.25-point lead over second-place Connecticut (39.75 points) and the men advance through the second day in sixth place (22 points), just seven and a half points behind South Florida (fifth).
Alexa Aragon won the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:11.07. The event victory awarded 10 points to Notre Dame’s team scoring. Aragon surpassed second-place finisher Shelby Greany (Providence) by five seconds. Greany placed 10th at the 2012 NCAA Championships in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:19.54).
Eighteen Fighting Irish members advanced to tomorrow’s finals showdown. Of the individuals competing tomorrow, nine set in the top-three spots after the preliminary round. Jade Barber (100mH) and Margaret Bamgbose (400m) recorded the fastest times during the trials into the finals. Chris Giesting and Patrick Feeney are each set to compete in the 200m and the 400m.
Alexa Aragon (3,00m steeplechase), Carly Loeffel, (heptathlon-second), Ted Glasnow (decathlon-third), Logan Renwick (long jump-third) and Emily Morris (shot put-third) all achieved all-BIG EAST citations. Aragon, Renwick and Glasnow earned their second-straight all-BIG EAST outdoor accolade while Loeffel and Morris earn their first.

“Emily (Morris) has been practicing really well over the last few weeks and as soon as indoor was over I told her there is no way we are finishing seventh during the outdoor season. Our goal was to break 15 meters and we exceeded that. Our goal now is to get another meter for regionals. The discus participants that are competing tomorrow have been practicing really hard as well and I am excited to see how they do.”

“We had a really good day today. With the people that competed in the trials, we pretty much advanced everyone that we thought had a great shot at making it into the finals. We had a great day in the field as well. Emily getting third in shot put was a big deal. The multi-event athletes and pole vaulters all brought in some points. We did more than we thought we could do and rose above and embraced the challenges we faced.”

MEN:
100mH (decathlon): Glasnow won his section and placed fourth (803 points) in the event with a time of 15.39.
1,500m (decathlon): Odegard placed second in the event (4:28.39-755 points) while Glasnow finished seventh (4:57.39-575 points).
Pole vault (decathlon): Odegard won the event clearing a height of 4.65m. Glasnow placed fourth successfully rising over the bar at 4.25m.
Javelin (decathlon): Glasnow placed fourth (53.44m-640 points) and Odegard finished seventh (45.19m-518 points.)
Discus (decathlon): Glasnow secured a third-place finish (41.95m-704 points) and Odegard placed sixth (38.96m-643 points).
Decathlon (finals): Glasnow placed third in the event for the second-straight year to earn an all-BIG EAST accolade after finishing third (7,223 points). Glasnow won the long jump and placed second in the high jump and shot put. Odegard placed sixth through the ten events with a total of 6,624 points. Odegard won the pole vault and placed second in the final event, 1,500m.
1,500m: Jeremy Rae, 2012 event champion, won section one stopping the clock at 4:00.03, just edging out Georgetown’s Bobby Peavey by a lean (4:00.03), advancing to the finals tomorrow with J.P. Malette. Malette finished fifth in his heat and overall (3:54.18), just a second behind Villanova’s Jordan Williamsz (3:53.57).
400m: Chris Giesting (47.27), Patrick Feeney (47.50) and Brendan Dougherty (47.32) each advanced to the finals. Giesting and Fenney both won their heat while Dougherty took second. Giesting, 2012 event champion, will look to repeat as an all-BIG EAST honoree.
Long Jump: Logan Renwick was named all-BIG EAST after placing third in the event (7.62m) Keith Mesidor finished fourth and nabbed five points for Notre Dame’s team score. Renwick chased the current school record currently held by Marshaun West (7.82m-2000). The distances today for Renwick and Mesidor also mark career bests.
400mH: Jarrod Buchanon (53.43) and Aaron Dunn (54.03) each advance to the finals. 200m: Giesting (21.02-second) and Feeney (21.40-fourth) advance to the finals in the event from the field of 21 participants.
10,000m: Jake Kildoo picked up a point for the Irish with his eighth-place finish (29:58.73).
WOMEN:
Heptathlon: The 2012 BIG EAST indoor pentathlon runner-up, Carly Loeffel, placed second in the event to earn all-BIG EAST honors once more this season. The sophomore compiled a total of 5,411 points and was just edged out by Elizabeth Kline from Pittsburgh (49 points) for a first-place finish. According to Track & Field Results Reporting System (as of May 1), Loeffel is ranked third in the NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List with today’s finish and No. 15 on the combined list. Meghan Moore placed fifth with 4,733 points, achieving a personal best in the point total and giving the Irish four points towards the team scoring.
800m (heptathlon): Loeffel placed third (2:24.24-767 points) followed by Moore who finished fifth (2:25.51).
Long Jump (heptathlon): Loeffel finished second (5.74m-771 points). Moore was fifth (5.24m-626 points).
Javelin (heptathlon): Loeffel won the event with a distance of 33.94m (551 points).
1,500m: Kelly Curran placed second in section one and second overall with a time of 4:25.37. Rebecca Tracy, 2012 event champion, won her section (4:27.02) and placed fifth overall in the field of 25. Both student-athletes advance to the finals.
100mH: Jade Barber took the top time in the event crossing the line at 13.22. Nevada Sorenson finished second in the field of 19 with a time of 13.38. The pair safely advance to tomorrow’s finals.
800m: Danielle Aragon placed third in her heat and third overall with a time of 2:06.73. Emily Frydrych claimed the final qualifying spot, stopping the clock at 2:11.35.
400m: Margaret Bamgbose (53. 52) and Michelle Brown (53.67) take the top two times in the event and advance to the finals. The pair each crossed the line in front of 2012 champion Celina Emerson (Connecticut) as she placed third (53.67) behind Brown.
Shot Put: Emily Morris earned an all-BIG EAST accolade after finishing third with a hurl of 15.21m. The throw is a personal best and neared the school record held by Rudy Atang (15.64m-2011).
100m: Aijah Urssery recorded the third fastest time in the event (11:58) and advances to the finals. The time is the fastest record time this season for the junior and is the second-straight year Urssery has advanced to the finals.
400mH: Megan Yanik (1:00.40-second) and Michelle Rotondo (1:00.88-fifth) both qualify for tomorrow’s finals.
Pole Vault: Kelly Burke earned a fourth-place finish in the event, clearing a height of 3.75m. Ann Polcari finished sixth, rising to a height of 3.65m.
