Irish Wrap Competition At Northwestern Duals

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams closed out a successful weekend Sunday at the Northwestern Duals, held at the programs’ Castellan Family Fencing Center.

The top-ranked Irish women (35-1) finished the day at 4-0 and ran their current win streak to 22 matches. The No. 1 men (27-6) were 2-2 on the day.

How It Happened

Ohio State (Round 2)
In their first match of the day, the No. 1 Irish women down No. 5 Ohio State 15-12, led by a 7-2 effort from the foil squad. Junior foilists Sabrina Massialas and Elyssa Kleiner each went 3-0 in the match, while sabreuses Francesca Russo and Reghan Ward and epeeist Julia Barry each posted 2-1 marks.

The Irish men fell to the No. T-2 Buckeyes 15-12, despite 3-0 marks from senior sabreur Jonah Shainberg and freshman foilist Nick Itkin. Sophomore sabreur Arsenii Panteleev was 2-1 in the match.

Stanford (M) (Round 5)
After two rounds of byes, the Irish fell to the 10th-ranked Cardinal 15-12. Notre Dame rested its foil regulars, where Stanford dominated 7-2. Shainberg was 3-0 in the match, while senior sabreur Jonathan Fitzgerald went 2-1.

Air Force (W) (Round 5)
Women’s sabre and foil were dominant against the Falcons. Russo remained undefeated at 3-0, while Ward was 2-0 to lead the sabre squad to 6-3, while Regan Fitzgerald and Mari Summers each went 3-0 as the foil squad finished 8-1.

Incarnate Word (Round 6)
Both Irish teams cruised past the Cardinals as the women prevailed 22-5 and the men won 21-6. Both sabre squads posted 9-0 records, as did women’s foil, and the men’s epee team went 7-2.

Air Force (M) (Round 7)
Shainberg capped a perfect day with a 2-0 mark in a 17-10 victory over the Falcons, while epeeists Nicholas Hanahan and Dylan French and sabreur David Brown were also 2-0.

Stanford (W) (Round 7)
Notre Dame closed the day with a 17-10 win over Stanford, completing a perfect weekend. Jamie Norville (3-0, sabre), Reagan Fitzgerald (2-0, foil) and Erica Tsai (1-0, foil) were unbeaten in the match.

The Irish return to action next week for two days of competition Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 10-11) at the Duke Duals in Durham, North Carolina.
