Irish Finish Seventh At The Invitational At Kiawah

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team, after carding a final round 303 (+15) on Tuesday, finished in seventh place at the second annual Invitational at Kiawah at the Ocean Course. The squad finished with a 54-hole score of 893 (+29) at the two-day event.

The Florida Gators won the tournament with an 11-shot victory, finishing as the lone sub-par team at 858 (-6). UAB finished second at five over (869), while South Florida claimed third at six over (870). Individually, Sam Love of UAB used a final round 70 (-2) to claim medalist honors at seven under (209) for the tournament.

For the Irish, Max Scodro (Chicago, Ill.) once again led the way amongst the rotation, earning his third top-10 finish of the fall docket with a tie for seventh at even par (216). The Irish senior struggled out of the gates on his Tuesday round, falling to four over (40) after his opening nine holes. Scodro would grab back two strokes on his closing nine, notching birdies on the seventh and eighth holes to finish his round at two over (72).

After a tough opening round 79 (+7), Paul McNamara III (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.) moved into second amongst the Irish rotation and tied for 23rd overall after firing a final round 74 (+2) to concluded at 223 (+7) overall. While recording only eight pars in his final 18 holes, the Notre Dame junior also posted four birdies to go along with six bogeys. It is the third top-25 finish for McNamara on the fall campaign.

Sophomore Niall Platt (Santa Barbara, Calif.), meanwhile, played a fairly consistent final round of golf in posting a team-best 13 pars on the day to go along with one birdie, three bogeys and double bogey. With his final round 76 (+4), Platt finished tied for 27th overall at 224 (+8).

While finishing fourth amongst the Irish lineup, Chris Walker (The Woodlands, Texas) battled through the toughest round of the day among the group, posting an 83 (+11). The senior did post three birdies, but was hampered by five bogeys along with a double bogey, triple bogey and a quadruple bogey on the 18th hole. Walker finished tied for 59th at 235 (+19).

Senior Tom Usher (Baildon, England) finished fifth out of the Irish contingent and was the final score counted in Tuesday’s round after carding a 79 (+7). Usher registered 11 pars along with one birdie, four bogeys and two double bogeys. Overall, he earned a share of 61st at 236 (+20).

Sophomore Andrew Lane (Fairport, N.Y.) wrapped up the Irish entrants, finishing in a tie for 64th overall at 239 (+23). After struggling on his opening nine holes (43, +7) that saw him card five bogeys and a double bogey, Lane bounced back to play his final nine holes at two over (38) to post a final day 81 (+9).

Notre Dame now turns its attention to the final fall tournament on the schedule, the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate. The tournament takes place Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Royal Oaks Golf Club in Dallas, Texas.
