St. Louis, Mo. – Boston University defenseman Sean Escobedo scored with 1:07 left in the third period to give the Terriers a 5-4 win in the championship game of the Warrior College Hockey Ice Breaker Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Scottrade Center.
Escobedo’s goal snapped a 4-4 tie and handed Irish freshmen goaltender Steven Summerhays the loss in his first collegiate start.
Notre Dame was led offensively by sophomore Nick Larson, who scored twice in the game. Freshman Bryan Rust added a short-handed goal and freshman defenseman Shayne Taker scored his first career goal.
Sahir Gill, David Warsofsky, Joe Periera and Kevin Gilroy joined Escobedo on the scoresheet for Boston University. Gill added three assists in the game for a four-point game in just his second collegiate contest.
The win dropped the 17th-ranked Irish to 1-1-0 on the season while the 14th-ranked Terriers improved to 2-0-0 in the early season.
Gill started the scoring at 7:20 of the first when he banged home the rebound of a Warsofsky shot from the right point. Summerhays made the original save, only to see Gill one-time the rebound for his first career goal.
Notre Dame knotted the score at 1-1 when Rust teamed with Riley Sheahan on a two-on-one penalty killing effort at 16:20. Sheahan carried the puck deep into the BU zone and fed Rust in front. The freshman redirected the pass through Garrett Rollheiser’s pads for his first career goal.
Boston University would take the lead late in the first at 18:22 when Gill fed Warsofsky at the right point and the junior defenseman slapped it through a screen past Summerhays to make it 2-1.
The teams traded the first two goals of the second period. Larson got the tying goal at 6:21 when he whipped a shot from the left side past Rollheiser for his second goal of the season. T.J. Tynan and Billy Maday assisted on the goal.
The Terriers retook the lead at 10:43 when Periera pounced on the rebound of a Garrett Noonan shot and lifted it over Summerhays for his third of the season and a 3-2 BU lead.
The Irish would take a 4-3 lead with goals just 1:14 apart from Taker and Larson with his second.
Freshman Anders Lee carried the puck out of the left wing circle and tried to stuff a shot past Rollheiser. The BU goaltender made the stop but Taker crashed the crease from his spot on the left point and shoveled the rebound home at 15:50 for his first career marker.
Larson put Notre Dame ahead, 4-3, at 17:04 when his centering pass from the right corner deflected off of Rollheiser’s stick and into the goal. For Larson, the goal was his second of the game and third of the season.
Notre Dame couldn’t handle the prosperity as the Terriers tied the game at 19:13 when Gilroy tied the game as he deflected a pass by Gill past Summerhays for his first of the season.
Neither team could score in the final period until Escobedo broke through at 18:53 with the game-winning goal.
The Irish out shot Boston University, 34-24, in the game. Summerhays finished with 18 saves while Rollheiser had 30. Notre Dame was 0-for-7 on the power play while the Terriers were 0-for-4.
In the third-place game, Wisconsin took a 6-0 decision over Holy Cross.
The Irish return home to open the home schedule on Thur.-Fri., Oct. 14-15 when they play host to the Lake Superior State Lakers. The series is the CCHA opener for both teams. Games both nights are set for 7:35 p.m. at the Joyce Center.
