Women's Golfer Ashley Armstrong Named A WGCA All-American Scholar

July 2, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame women’s golf standout Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) has been named to the Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar Team for the second consecutive year.

Armstrong was among 644 women’s collegiate golfers from Divsions I, II and III recognized for this prestigious honor. The criteria for selection to the WGCA All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50% (Division I) or 66% (Division II or III) of the college or university’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Armstrong was named a Capital One Academic All-American from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) last month as she garnered third-team accolades in the women’s at-large program and became the first Irish women’s golfer in program history to earn Academic All-America® recognition.

Armstrong, the 2012 BIG EAST Championship medalist, added two more individual championships to her medal count in 2012-13 as she won back-to-back tournament titles with victories during the month of March at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate and the Briar’s Creek Invitational.

She was recognized during as Golfweek’s Women’s National Player of the Week (March 25-31) and the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Player of the Week (March 17-23). Furthermore, Armstrong earned all-BIG EAST honors for the second consecutive season after finishing fifth at the conference tournament with a three-over-par 219 (77-72-70).

Armstrong’s two under-par rounds at the BIG EAST Championship proved to be a key factor in securing Notre Dame’s team title and automatic bid into the ’13 NCAA East Regional as the Irish earned their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA regional. She served as a major contributor to Notre Dame’s success this past season, tallying three top-10 finishes and seven top-25 finishes in 10 tournaments with all of her 28 rounds counting toward team scoring.

A two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, Armstrong boasts a 3.891 cumulative GPA as a mechanical engineering major in the College of Engineering and has made the Dean’s List in each of her first four semesters.
