CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Notre Dame’s second-ranked women’s soccer team used two second-half goals by Jenny Heft in a 3-0 win over 14th-ranked Duke in the first game of the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. Meotis Erikson scored the game-winning goal at 29:12 before Heft put the game away in the second half.
Notre Dame outshot Duke 17-4 for the game, scoring on two of six shots in the second half. The Irish improve to 4-0-0 with the win while the Blue Devils fall to 2-2-0. Notre Dame returns to action at the Carolina Classic on Sun., Sept. 13, when the Irish take on host and top-ranked North Carolina at 2:30 p.m.
The Irish outshot the Blue Devils 11-1 in the first half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Meotis Erikson found the net at 29:12 after Jenny Heft took a throw-in from Lindsey Jones and dribbled to the corner of the end line and the net. Heft then slipped a pass through a pair of Blue Devils in front of the goal to an unmarked Erikson.
Heft and Erikson set up Notre Dame’s second goal just five minutes into the second half when Shannon Boxx fed Erikson a pass just beyond midfield. Erikson then turned and punched the ball through the Duke backline to Heft, who dribbled to the left wing past the extended Blue Devil goalkeeper and scored with a shot from 15 yards into the lower right corner of the net at 50:06.
Heft made it 3-0 at 66:36 when she took a pass from Jenny Streiffer from midfield that split the Duke backline on the right wing. Heft then turned the corner on the Blue Devils and scored past the extended goalkeeper into the lower right corner.
