NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame freshman midfielder Lindsey Jones scored just 56 seconds into the game for the game-winning goal and set up a second goal as the third-ranked Irish women’s soccer team blanked Rutgers 3-0 Friday at Alumni Field. Sophomore Meotis Erikson and junior Jenny Streiffer also added goals for Notre Dame, which outshot Rutgers 34-3. The Irish improve to 5-1-0 and 3-0-0 in the BIG EAST while the Scarlet Knights fall to 1-4-1, 1-1-1 in the conference.

For the second consecutive game, the Irish scored in the first minute of the game. After Monica Gerardo scored 55 second in against North Carolina, Jones was a second behind when her hard shot from 20 yards out from the left wing ricocheted off a Rutgers defender and into the upper right corner of the net. The goal was the first of her career.

Erikson put the Irish up 2-0 just about four minutes later when she tapped in a cross from Jones from the left endline at 4:53. Streiffer would close out the scoring at 38:57 when she booted in a rebound from 10 yards out from the left wing into the upper middle of the net. Makinen smacked the right post with a shot from 20 yards to set up Streiffer’s goal.

After scoring on three of their first 13 shots, the Irish would continue to pressure the Knights but would miss on their final 21 shots of the game. Junior goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene played the entire 90 minutes to record her third shutout of the season.

Notre Dame returns to action when Villanova travels to Alumni Field for a 1:00 p.m. BIG EAST matchup. The Wildcats enter with a 3-3-0 record and 1-3-0 mark in the BIG EAST following a 1-0 loss at Pittsburgh on Friday.
