Winter Named BIG EAST Softball Pitcher Of The Week

March 11, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame junior Laura Winter (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Winter, the 2012 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, enjoyed a stellar weekend at the Arizona State Diamond Devil Invitational, posting a 2-0 record and 0.47 ERA in three appearances in the circle for the Irish. The 6-1 right-hander allowed one run on four hits in a complete game win Saturday over New Mexico State, finishing one strikeout (13) shy of equaling a season-high. After working a scoreless inning of relief in Saturday’s second game against UC Davis, Winter tossed her first shutout of the season Sunday in a rematch with New Mexico State, striking out nine Aggie hitters.

The Notre Dame hurler also added a pair of extra base hits at the plate during play Saturday at the Diamond Devil Invitational, roping a double in game one against New Mexico State and blasting a solo home run against UC Davis.

Winter’s conference honor is the fourth BIG EAST weekly citation earned by an Irish player this season. Emilee Koerner was named BIG EAST Player of the Week Feb. 25 and selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll March 4, while Jenna Simon made the season’s first conference honor roll Feb. 11.

Notre Dame continues its West Coast swing Wednesday at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif. against Cal State Fullerton, with first pitch set for 5 p.m. (PT).
