Wingate Named ACC Offensive POTW

Earns first ACC weekly honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second consecutive week, a Notre Dame women’s soccer player has been selected by the Atlantic Coast Conference as its Player of the Week (Offensive or Defensive). Last week it was freshman Leah Klenke who picked up the Defensive side of the award, and this week, it was grad student Olivia Wingate who took home the ACC Offensive Player of the Week honor. For Wingate, it marked her first ACC weekly award.

To earn it, Wingate fired off her first career hat trick in a 4-1 win over No. 22 Wisconsin last Thursday, scoring all three goals in the second half. In fact, she scored two of her goals exactly two minutes apart.

Wingate now leads the Irish in both goals (5) and points (11) on the season. For reference, a year ago, Wingate tallied a career-best seven goals in a season.

Wingate and the rest of the Fighting Irish return to action on Thursday, Sept. 8, when they hit the road for an in-state battle at Purdue. The two sides last squared off in the second round of last year’s NCAA Tournament. After tying 1-1 through double overtime, the Irish advanced 4-3 on PK’s. First touch is scheduled for 7 pm ET on BTN+.
