Wasserman And Kimmel Headline Day Two Of Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. – Day two of the Raleigh Relays featured a number of strong showings for Notre Dame, particularly from two newcomers to the program.

Graduate student Katie Wasserman set the meet and track record in her first ever collegiate outdoor track 5,000m race by crossing the finish line in 15:33.35 to win the event. The time is the second fastest in program history behind only Olympian Molly Huddle (15:32.55).

In her first official meet as a member of the Fighting Irish track and field team, Maura Kimmel made an immediate impact, winning the discus event and nearly setting the program record in the process. Kimmel recorded a throw of 52.58m, which not only was enough for first but also was the second best mark in program history.

Teammate Rachel Tanzos took sixth place in the event with a mark of 49.14m.

Fresh off a 10th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country National Championships, Danny Kilrea  picked up a fourth place finish in the 10,000m run, finishing with a time of 28:34.36, which is both a new personal record and also the third best time recorded in program history.

Madison Schmidt also turned in a top 10 performance, taking seventh place in the high jump. The freshman cleared the bar at 1.65m to get her outdoor season underway.

The Irish wrap up their opening meet of the outdoor season with day three of the Raleigh Relays on Saturday, March 27. The first event of the day is the hammer throw at 10 a.m. ET.
