NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to compete at the BIG EAST Outdoor Conference Championship Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Jumbo Elliott Track at Villanova Stadium in Villanova, Pa. Action is set to begin Friday at 11:00 a.m. (ET), Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
The men’s track and field team enters the 2011 BIG EAST Championship having won the past three seasons.
Among the male student-athletes who won all-BIG EAST honors in 2010 and return to the track and field this season are junior Kevin Schipper (Leo, Ind./Bishop Dwenger), who won the pole vault (5.25m) and was also the 2011 indoor pole vault champion with a vault of 5.25m. Additionally, senior Denes Veres (Ellwood City, Pa./Riverside) is the returning champion in the shot put (18.57m).
Seniors Greg Davis (Peachtree, Ga./Starr’s Mill) and Justin Schneider (Atlanta, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) were second-place finishers at the 2010 league contest. Davis threw 58.56m in the hammer throw and Schneider earned 7,102 points in the decathlon. The 400-meter relay and the 3,200-meter relay also finished in second place.
Jack Howard (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) ran 1:50.70 to finish in third place in the 800 meters and this season has the fifth-fastest 800 time in the conference at 1:49.82.
On the women’s side, Maddie Buttinger (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection C.S.S.) finished runner-up in the heptathlon with 5,278 points.
Among the competitors who did not earn all-BIG EAST honors in 2010, but will heavily contribute to the team this season are sophomore Jeremy Rae (Fort Erie, Ontario/Lakeshore Catholic) who finished the 1,500-meter run in fifth place in 2010, but currently ranks third in the conference (3:41.11) and eighth nationally. Senior Dan Jackson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) enters the meet ranked second in the conference in the 10,000-meter run (29:28.61).
