NOTRE DAME, Ind. — On the strength of his role in a pair of shutout wins to help the University of Notre Dame men’s soccer team claim the 13th annual Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament, along with scoring his first career collegiate goal, it was a banner weekend for Irish senior defender Michael Shipp.
Both the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and TopDrawerSoccer recognized Shipp for his standout performance at right back during the tournament triumph, as he was awarded ACC Defensive Player of the Week and TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honors on Tuesday. The weekly awards were the first such accolades that Shipp has received during his Notre Dame career.
Shipp is the second Irish defender in as many weeks to take home the top ACC weekly honor, joining junior center back Brandon Aubrey (Sept. 2). Aubrey was also tabbed the TopDrawerSoccer Men’s Soccer Player of the Week on Sept. 2 for his all-tournament team performance at the season-opening adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
Shipp was the most impactful Notre Dame defender during the two-game schedule at the 2015 Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. The Irish defense held USF and UAB to 17 shots over 180 minutes, with only three tries by opponents finding the net. Shipp also chipped in on the offensive end, connecting on his first career goal in the 20th minute for the ultimate game-winner during the 4-0 Notre Dame win against UAB.
Shipp was selected as the most outstanding defensive player for his performance in the tournament.
Along with Shipp, sophomore forward Jon Gallagher was selected to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week after scoring three goals during the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. Gallagher, who notched the game-winner in a 2-0 victory over No. 24 USF before adding a pair of goals against UAB, was named the event’s most outstanding offensive player.
No. 2 Notre Dame hosts No. 9 Clemson to open the 2015 ACC schedule on Saturday at 7 p.m. (ET) inside Alumni Stadium. The match will be carried live on ESPN3.
