Notre Dame claimed four race victories during a third place finish at the Dale England Cup over the weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — With inclement weather looming, the Saturday schedule at the seventh annual Dale England Cup was forced to condense from a split session regatta to a single morning competition featuring four-lane racing in each boating event. The University of Notre Dame rowing team battled against a pair of top 15 national foes but was unable to break into the winner’s circle, finishing third in the final team standings at the conclusion of racing on Lake Lemon.

No. RV Notre Dame accrued a total of 42 points in the standings that were based on points scored in the three NCAA events, the first and second varsity eight and first varsity four, to decide the Dale England Cup champion. No. 12 Texas claimed the cup with 63 points, with No. 11 Indiana placing second with 57 points.

Indiana opened the day’s events with a win in the first varsity eight, crossing the finish line in 6:53.90. Texas earned runner-up honors with a time of 6:59.20. The Notre Dame entry of coxswain Alex Techar, Carlee Beckler, Sarah Kappers, Hilary Shinnick, Elizabeth Kelley, Alexis Olson, Ailish Sheehan, Anna Kottkamp and Joanna Mulvey placed third in 7:07.60.

Texas emerged as the victor in second varsity eight racing, logging a winning time of 7:06.20. Coxswain Reilly Kearney, Elizabeth Gilbert, Rose Doerfler, Ellen Gleadow, Catherine Wagner, Sarah Russel, Katie Skorcz, Gretchen Bruggeman and Madeline Loper guided Notre Dame into second place with a readout of 7:10.80.

The Longhorns secured the regatta title with a solid win in the first varsity four, posting a victorious time of 8:05.40. The Notre Dame lineup of coxswain Jill Ryan, Bailey Amenabar, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Meredith Swartz and Stella Willoughby took third place with a time of 8:20.00.

Notre Dame bounced back to secure runner-up placements in the final two races of the day, starting with a second place row in the second varsity four. Coxswain Mikaela Prego, Emily Horton, Megan McKeon, Elizabeth Walter and Madelynn Conlin raced to the line in 8:40.40 to check in behind Texas (8:30.50).

Two Irish boats competed in the final race of the regatta, a combined heat of the remaining Notre Dame and Indiana varsity eights. The Notre Dame third varsity eight lineup of coxswain Samantha Hedrick, Patricia Walsh, Kate Trankina, Christine Schindele-Murayama, Clare Scantling, Erin Dolan, Bridget Adam, Moira Hamilton and Mairead Dunne took second place with a time of 7:53.50. The Irish fourth varsity eight squad comprised of coxswain Erin Coscia, Carson Canonie, Lauren Saunee, Lauren McKee, Elena Brindley, Christine McGough, Stephanie Dubois, Kristen McEneaney and Lauren Matchett claimed fourth place after recording an 8:16.80 readout.
