NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame track and field program had a record 36 members from the men’s and women’s programs qualify for NCAA Regionals, as announced by the NCAA on Wednesday evening.
Twenty male athletes earned qualification while 16 on the women’s side earned the nod. The 20 men and 16 women represent the most athletes either team has ever sent to NCAA Regionals.
Both the men’s and women’s teams have a number of athletes in prime positions to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in June. Yared Nuguse is the current favorite in the 1,500m race, as he set the NCAA all-time record with a time of 3:34.68 on his way to defending his ACC title in the event.
Samuel Voelz currently ranks 12th in the country in the 800m after recording a PR of 1:46.86 at the ACC Championships in Raleigh.
The women have performers currently ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA in four events. Wasserman enters the NCAA Regionals with the eighth mark in the 5,000m (15:33.35).
Coming off a fourth place finish in the pentathlon at the indoor championships, freshman Jadin O’Brien currently sits seventh in the national heptathlon standings.
Another freshman who has already made an immediate impact is Olivia Markezich, who currently sits 10th in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:45.72.
