July 25, 2013

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s golfers Niall Platt and Andrew Lane were both named Division I Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars Wednesday, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). It was the first time two Irish players have been selected as All-America Scholars in the same season.

To be eligible for the award, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team’s official competitive rounds or the NCAA Championship, maintain a stroke-average of 76.0 or below (Division I) and carry a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. Each player is also expected to have a high moral character and be in good standing with his respective college or university.

A total of 152 players across Division I men’s golf received 2013 All-America Scholar status.

Platt posted the lowest stroke-average among all Notre Dame players last season, compiling a cumulative clip of 73.41 in 24 rounds. He earned two top-five finishes, including his first career collegiate win at the Macdonald Cup at the Course at Yale (Sept. 29-30, 2012), and logged a total of five top-25 results. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native has the second-lowest career stroke-average in Irish history (73.55), and has finished in the top 10 a total of 10 times during his first three seasons at Notre Dame.

Lane emerged as a steady contributor in the Irish rotation as a junior in 2012-13, earning the start in each of Notre Dame’s nine team tournaments. The Fairport, N.Y. native posted a 74.62 season stroke-average, and recorded what was then his second career top-25 finish during the fall slate, claiming a share of 11th place (72-74-71-217, +4) at the Georgetown Intercollegiate (Oct. 22-23). Lane fired a career-low two-under par 68 in the first round of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate at the Kingsmill Resort River Course (March 24) to finish in a tie for third place.

Notre Dame opens its 2013-14 season Sept. 8-9 at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota, at the Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
