NOTRE DAME, Ind. – On Friday, three Irish athletes competed in the women’s pentathlon at the South Carolina Invitational. Freshmen Jadin O’Brien, Alaina Brady, and Madison Schmidt all turned in top-10 program record performances.
Jadin O’Brien took the pentathlon crown, edging out Sterling Lester from Florida in the 800m run with a time of 2:20.76 to claim the race and the top spot on the day. O’Brien won the long jump (5.73m) and 800m run and took second in the 60m hurdles (8.66s) and shot put (12.26m).
O’Brien’s long jump effort was good for ninth in program history. Her overall pentathlon score of 3965 is fourth all-time in program history.
Alaina Brady turned in another program top-10 pentathlon performance with a score of 3482, moving her to eighth in Irish history. On the day, her score notched her an eighth-place finish, with her best single event being the 60m hurdles (8.80) in which she crossed the line fourth.
Madison Schmidt finished in ninth place with a score of 3374, also a program top-10 mark. Schmidt took third place in the high jump, clearing a mark of 1.71m, the best for the Irish in the event on the day, and third in the 800m run with a time of 2:23.73.
The Irish next travel to Ames, Iowa, for the Iowa State Classic as a number of Notre Dame’s top distance runners will compete on February 12 and 13. Rachel Tanczos will travel to the Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tennessee, to compete in both the weight throw and the shot put.
