Nuguse Earns First Team All-America Honors In 1,500m

EUGENE, Ore. – The Notre Dame track and field program completed the men’s portion of the NCAA Championships on Friday evening at Hayward Field and got the women’s heptathlon underway.

Yared Nuguse capped off his illustrious season with a runner-up finish in the 1,500m. The senior posted a time of 3:35.60, which is the seventh fastest time in NCAA history for the event. Nuguse now has three of the 11 fastest times ever recorded in the event in the NCAA.

The second-place finish gives him First Team All-America honors, his second citation of the 2020-21 year.

To finish off the men’s portion of the meet for the Irish Dylan Jacobs picked up Second Team All-America status in the 5,000m with an 11th place finish. Jacobs turned in the best performance of his career, finishing in 13:25.65, shaving more than 11 seconds off his previous career-best time.

Jadin O’Brien kicked off day one of the heptathlon with four of the seven events on Friday. The freshman sits in 18th place after the first day of competition with a score of 3,292 points. O’Brien’s best finish of the day came in the shot put, placing 10th with a mark of 12.26m.

The Irish close out the NCAA Championships with the fourth and final day of competition on Saturday, June 12. The day gets started at 2 p.m. ET with the second of two days of the heptathlon for O’Brien and then Maura Kimmel competes in the discus at 5:35 p.m. ET.

The track portion features Olivia Markezich in the 3,000m steeplechase final (6:24 p.m. ET) and ends the meet for Notre Dame with the 5,000m final (7:55 p.m. ET) which features Katie Wasserman and Maddy Denner. The heptathlon and discus will stream live on ESPN3 and the steeplechase and 5,000m will air live on ESPNU.
