Nuguse Defends 1,500m Title In Final Day Of ACC Championships

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Fighting Irish track and field program wrapped up the 2021 Outdoor ACC Championships on Saturday, picking up another event title and seven more All-ACC honors.

The men’s team finished the championships in fourth, totaling 80.5 points. Both the fourth place finish and the 80.5 points are the best for the Irish since joining the ACC during the 2014 season. The women’s team finished in eighth place with 53 points.

Yared Nuguse continued his domination, defending his 2019 title in the 1,500m race by finishing first in 3:40.86. This came just two days after Nuguse set the NCAA record and hit the Olympic A standard in the event with a time of 3:34.68 on a solo run.

Samuel Voelz impressed in the 800m final, placing second with a time of 1:46.86, both a PR and the second fastest time by a Notre Dame runner in program history. The effort earned Voelz First Team All-ACC status.

The other Irish athlete to earn First Team All-ACC accolades on Saturday was another men’s distance runner, as Dylan Jacobs placed third in the 5,000m final by crossing the line in 13:37.41 to post the third best time in program history.

Matthew Carmody earned second team status in the event, as he finished right behind Jacobs in 13:41.79, the fifth best time in Notre Dame history.

The women’s distance runners also had notable performances. Katie Wasserman turned in a PR time of 4:10.67 in the 1,500m final, the second fastest time every recorded by an Irish runner. Wasserman placed fourth to earn Second Team All-ACC accolades.

Erin Archibeck also turned in a top five all-time mark in the 5,000m final, taking sixth with a time of 15:55.40 to garner Second Team All-ACC honors.

In the field events a freshman was the highlight of the day for the Irish. Madison Schmidt took fourth place in the high jump, clearing 1.75m to take home a second team citation.

The Irish have next weekend off as they prepare for NCAA Regionals from March 27-29 in Jacksonville, Florida.
