July 9, 2015 NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) annually honors the top student-athletes in the country for their achievements in the classroom and on the playing field as Academic All-Americans. More than 750 student-athletes are recognized each year from more than 17,500 nominations.

Since the inception of the Academic All-America program more than 60 years ago, the University of Notre Dame has ranked among the leaders nationally in the number of Academic All-Americans the school has produced. During the 2014-15 school year, eight Fighting Irish student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-America honors.

The eight student athletes honored this past year were: Ashley Armstrong (women’s golf), Patrick Hodan (men’s soccer), Lee Kiefer (women’s fencing), Anna Kottkamp (rowing), Luke Mishu (men’s soccer), Emma Reaney, Corey Robinson (football), and Peter Schneider (Hockey).

CoSIDA manages the selection and voting process for Academic All-Americans by selecting teams in baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, men’s soccer women’s soccer, softball, women’s track and field and cross country, men’s track and field and cross country, women’s volleyball, as well as men’s and women’s at large teams selected from all other sports in which the NCAA sponsors a championship event.

Notre Dame boasts 246 Academic All-Americans all-time and ranks second nationally in that category. Over the past three years, 23 Fighting Irish student-athletes have copped Academic All-America accolades.

The University of Nebraska stands first with 320 Academic Academic All-Americans. Notre Dame is followed on the list by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with 235 honorees, Stanford (191), Penn State (189), Emory (161), Augustana (Ill.) College (158), Nebraska Wesleyan (154), Alabama (139), and Washington (136).

Since 2000, Notre Dame ranks third in the number of student-athletes who have received Academic All-America citations with 120. MIT leads with 138, followed by Nebraska with 133.

The Fighting Irish top the lists in Academic All-Americans produced for baseball and women’s soccer and also rank in the top 10 in men’s at-large (third), football (third), men’s basketball (ninth), men’s soccer (ninth), women’s at-large (ninth), softball (10th).

To be eligible Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have received sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her communications office. Since 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and College Division team comprised of NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions.
