Men's Cross Country Takes First Place at Joe Piane Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – On Friday morning, the Notre Dame cross country team hosted the 2022 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. The men’s team had a strong showing by taking first place in the men’s blue five mile race. The women’s team took fourth place in their blue 5000m race.

Kevin Berry led the Irish on the men’s side by crossing the finish line at 23:31.9 and taking the first scoring position for Notre Dame. Not far behind were teammates Carter Solomon and Izaiah Steury. Solomon ran for a time of 23:37.7 and Steury crossed the finish line right behind him at 23:38.8.

Matthew Carmody took a time of 23:44.6 to continue adding to the scoring for the Irish. Carter Cheeseman also helped the Irish with a time of 23:54.1, while Jake Renfree (24:23.3) and Tom Seitzer (24:29.4) also finished to help the Irish to first place. Ryan Schumacher and Robbie Cozean finished at 24:35.5 and 24:38.9, respectively.

The women’s team was led by Olivia Markezich who ran for a time of 16:17.9 in the women’s blue 5000m race. Followed by Markezich was teammate Anna Sophia Keller. She crossed the finish line at 16:35.8. Katie Thronson and Maddy Denner finished at 16:36.9 and 16:49.1. Erin Strezlecki ran for a time of 17:07.1 with Siona Chisolm finishing at 17:25.7. Sophie Novak and Kaitlin Ryan finished the scoring for the Irish at 17:47.4 and 18:26.9.

In the women’s open race, Notre Dame took third place with Katie Rose Blachowicz running for a time of 17:50.9. Charlotte Turesson finished at 18:04.3 with Molly and Paige Grant finishing at 18:26.4 and 18:29.2, respectively. Catherine Coffey and Aimee Hayde crossed the finish line at 18:29.2 and 18:56.8.

The men’s open featured Quinn Gallagher leading the Irish. He ran for a time of 24:09.7. Nick Mota was right behind him as he crossed the finish line at 24:26.1. Henry Chapman also ran for a time of 24:51.2. Luke Schildmeyer crossed the finish line at 25:07.7. 

The Irish are back in action on Oct. 14 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational.
