Men's Fencing Posts Three Wins At Duke Duals

DURHAM, N.C. – The top-ranked Notre Dame men’s fencing team won three bouts at the Duke Duals to move to 20-0 on the season.

The Irish opened with a 16-11 triumph over tenth-ranked North Carolina. In the next round, Notre Dame defeated tenth-ranked Duke (UNC and Duke are tied for tenth in the poll) by slim margin, 14-13. With the Irish and Blue Devils tied at 13-13, Greg Schoolcraft (San Jose, Calif.) was trailing in the final bout, 4-3. But Schoolcraft landed the next two touches to give the Irish the win. Notre Dame closed out the duals with a 21-6 triumph over Johns Hopkins.

Against North Carolina, the Irish racked up seven foil wins, four in epee and five in sabre. Versus Duke, the Irish totaled four wins in foil, six in sabre and four in epee. To close out the duals against Johns Hopkins, the Irish earned eight foil wins, six epee and seven wins in sabre.

The men’s fencing team returns to action tomorrow, February 7 as they play host to the Notre Dame Duals. The two-day event is scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m. inside the Joyce Center.
