Men's And Women's Track And Field Team Opens Indoor Season

Notre Dame, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams began its indoor track season Friday (Dec. 3) with the Blue and Gold Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The Irish compiled 17 victories (10 women’s and seven men’s) against opponents, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Marquette and Bethel College.

Among the first-place finishes for the men includes senior Kevin Labus (Indianapolis, Ind./Brebeuf Jesuit) in the 800-meter run. Labus concluded the race in 1:52.06.

2010 All-American Jack Howard (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) claimed the crown in the 1,000-meter run, finishing the race in 2:27.68.

In the jumps department, junior Doug Onuscheck (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) won the high jump, clearing 2.01m. Freshman Logan Renwick (Butler, Pa./Butler) jumped 14.18m in the triple jump for a first-place finish.

Junior Kevin Schipper (Leo, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) won the pole vault, clearing 4.85m.

Senior thrower, Greg Davis (Peachtree, Ga./Starr’s Mill) won the weight throw with a toss of 18.17m.

On the women’s side, the sprint crew had a strong showing claiming first place in the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash and 500-meter dash. Freshman Aijah Urssery (Inglewood, Calif./St. Mary’s Academy) won the 60-meter dash in 7.78.

Sophomore Nevada Sorenson (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) took home first place in the 60-meter hurdles, while freshman Michelle Brown (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) ran the 400-meter dash in 57.08 for first place. Freshmen McKinzie Schulz (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) and Kelly Curran (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) made their Irish track and field debuts with victories. Schulz won the 1,000-meter run in 2:55.88 and Curran finished the mile in 4:49.85.

Sophomore Rebecca Tracy (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) won the 3,000-meter run in 9:48.01.

Junior Maddie Buttinger (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection C.S.S.) high jumped 1.68m to edge out teammate Kendra Jennings (La Prairie, Ill./Central).

Junior Mason Bashaw (Houston, Texas/Kincaid) earned a victory in the shot p ut with a throw of 16.02m.

The Irish men’s and women’s track and field team returns to action on January 15 at the Grand Valley State Open in Allendale, Mich.

Notre Dame Men’s Results

60-Meter Dash – Sean Lindbloom crossed the line in 7.35 for fourth place.

60-Meter Hurdles – Jarron Buchanon finished second in 8.51, followed by Schneider in fifth (8.67). Dean Odegard was a ninth-place finisher in 9.25.

200-Meter Dash – Feeney finished third in 22.41, followed by Lindbloom in 23:08 for fourth place. Princely Muro crossed the line in 23.22 for sixth place.

400-Meter Dash – Patrick Feeney concluded the race in second place (48.68), Edward Hitchler in third place (49.08) and Brendan Dougherty in fourth place (49.11). Buchanon and Princely Muro finished in sixth (50.37) and seventh place (50.68), respectively. Eric Roth finished in ninth place (50.94).

500-Meter Dash – Matt Brown finished fifth (1:06.17) and Brendan Dolan finished in 1:12.87 (ninth place). 800-Meter Run – Kevin Labus, Max Cruz and Eddy Gibbons finished in first place (1:52.06), second place (1:55.73) and third place (1:57.77).

1,000 Meter – Jack Howard finished in first place in 2:27.68. Trent Sayers was fourth in 2:29.66. Kevin Hendrickson and D.J. Thornton finished in eighth place and ninth place in 2:33.94 and 2:34.60, respectively. Mike Bradley finished 11th in 2:35.31.

1,600-Meter Relay – Notre Dame “A” (Hitchler, Schneider, Dougherty and Feeney) claimed the crown in 3:18.62. Notre Dame “C” (Odegard, Bavis, Paladino and Renwick) was the fifth-place finisher in 3:26.34. Notre Dame “B” (Roth, Brown, Muro and Buchanon) finished in 3:26.98 for sixth place and Notre Dame “D” (Cruz, Labus, Howard and Thornton) took seventh in 3:27.64.

5,000-Meter Run – Daniel Jackson was the third-place finisher in 14:44.42, followed by Ryan Gamboa in fourth place (14:45.73) and Martin Grady (14:45.95). Paul Springer concluded the race in sixth place (14:46.15), while Walter Schafer was in seventh place (14:59.74) and Mat Abernethy in eighth place in 15:01.14.

Long Jump – Justin Schneider finished fourth, jumping 6.47m, followed by Patrick Glass in sixth (6.38m). Glass tied with Eddie Anderson of DePaul. Connor Paladino finished eighth (6.16m) and Alex Bavis finished 11th (5.71m).

High Jump – Doug Onuscheck finished in first place, jumping 2.01m. Schneider, Bavis and Odegard jumped 1.91m (fourth), 1.81m (fifth) and 1.81 (sixth), in that order.

Triple Jump – Logan Renwick jumped 14.18m for first place. Glass finished in third place (13.76m), while Onuscheck jumped 11.62m (seventh place).

Pole Vault – Kevin Schipper finished first (4.85m), followed by Schneider in second (4.75m). Andrew Kolbeck and Dean Odegard finished in third place and fourth place. Kolbeck cleared 4.55m and Odegard reached 4.25m.

Weight Throw – Greg Davis claimed first place (18.17m), followed by Mitchell Gormley in second (16.91m). Andrew Hills, Mike Smigelski and Anthony Thomas finished in fourth (16.03m), fifth (15.49m) and sixth (15.20m), respectively.

Shot Put – Andrew Hills finished in third place (16.29m), followed by Andrew Brock in fourth place (14.54m) and Anthony Thomas in fifth place (14.52m).

Notre Dame Women’s Results

60-Meter Dash – Aijah Urssery finished in first place (7.78). Nevada Sorenson and Jessie Christian finished in fourth place (7.96) and fifth place (8.05), respectively. Kali Watkins crossed the line in 8.15 for eighth place.

60-Meter Hurdles – Nevada Sorenson captured first place, stopping the clock in 8.63, followed by Maddie Buttinger in second place (9.29). Ann Marie Kelly was the fourth-place finisher in 9.60.

200-Meter Dash – Urssery finished in second place for the Irish in 25.70, and was followed by Buttinger with a fourth-place finish at 25.96 and Ann Marie Kelly at 26.37 in seventh place. Tiffany Tibbot grabbed a ninth-place finish in 27.01 and Kali Watkins pulled in tenth place in 27.27.

400-Meter Dash – Michelle Brown finished first in 57.08, while Sasha Blanchard concluded the race in fifth place (1:00.04) and Tibbot in seventh place (1:00.35).

500-Meter Dash – Megan Yanik claimed first place in 1:15.70. Jaclyn Winkel finished in 1:18.50 (fourth place) and Elizabeth Andrusziewicz concluded the race in 1:24.20 for 10th place.

1,000-Meter Run – McKinzie Schulz claimed first place in 2:55.88, followed by Meg Ryan in 2:56.07 (second place) and Allison Schroeder in 2:56.35 (third place). Angela Ryck placed fourth in 2:59.09.

1,600-Meter Run – Kelly Curran finished first in 4:59.85, followed by Alexa Aragon in second place (4:59.91) and Gena Bleyer in third place (5.22.85). Michelle Mowry and Grace Brier were the fourth (5:25.73) and fifth-place (5:34.42) finishers.

1,600-Meter Relay – Notre Dame “A” (Yanik, Sorenson, Natalie Johnson and Michelle Brown) finished first in 3:53.88. Notre Dame “B” (Winkel, Tibbot, Kelly, Schroeder) was the third-place finisher in 4:01.41, while Notre Dame “C” (Blanchard, Andrusziewicz, Ryck and Buttinger) concluded the race in seventh place (4:17.33).

3,000-Meter Run – Rebecca Tracy finished first in 9:48.01, followed by Rachel Velarde in second place at 9:53.85. Susanna Sullivan captured fourth place at 10:10.80 and was followed closely by Theresa Cattuna at 10:13.15 for fifth place and Molly Hirt at 10:24.45 for sixth place and at seventh place Abby Higgins with a time of 10:29.92. Ryan Russ finished ninth with a time of 10:40.80 and Kari followed in tenth place with a time of 10:54.23.

Long Jump – Jasmine Williams jumped 5.13m for fourth place, followed by Buttinger in fifth (5.11m). Lauren Leniart finished in seventh place, jumping 4.69m.

High Jump – Buttinger cleared 1.68m for first place, while Kendra Jennings finished in second place (1.68m).

Pole Vault – Kelly Burke finished in second place (3.60m), followed by Kathryn Barousse in third place (3.40m) and Jessica Sullivan cleared 3.20m for fourth place.

Weight Throw – Mason Bashaw captured first place (16.02m). Madeline Casanova finished fourth (15.75m), followed by Vivien Devaney in fifth (13.93m) and Emily Kujawski in sixth (13.23m).

Shot Put – Casanova lead the Irish with a second place finish at a distance of 12.79 meters, following her in third place with a distance of 12.62 meters is DeVaney. Kujawski finished fourth with a distance of 12.20 meters.
