Kottkamp Named ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete Of The Year

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame rower Anna Kottkamp completed her stellar junior season in the classroom by being named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the ACC announced on Tuesday. Kottkamp was one of 11 Irish rowers who each received all-ACC academic recognition following Notre Dame’s first season competing in the conference in 2013-14.

To be eligible for consideration for the all-ACC Rowing Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester, while maintaining a cumulative 3.00 average during her academic career. The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in the fall of 2007 and is annually awarded to the top junior or senior student-athlete in a respective sport who has maintained a cumulative 3.00 or higher grade point average throughout their career.

As a team, Notre Dame led all conference affiliates with its 11 selections to the 2014 all-ACC Rowing Academic Team. Clemson followed with 10 total honorees, followed by Virginia with seven and Syracuse and Duke with six choices each.

Kottkamp, a member of the Notre Dame first varsity eight that finished in ninth place at the 2014 NCAA Championship, made program history by becoming the first Irish rower ever to win the NCAA Elite 89 Award. The Elite 89 Award is presented at each NCAA Championship finals event to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average in the field. Kottkamp was also selected as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) National Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year with a 4.0 GPA as an environmental science major in the Notre Dame College of Science.

A total of seven members of Notre Dame’s first varsity eight were named to the all-ACC Rowing Academic Team. Joining Kottkamp was junior Erin Boxberger, senior Molly Bruggeman, senior Christina Dines, senior Courtney Gaberino, sophomore Joanna Mulvey and senior Teresa Rubinger from the NCAA first eight lineup. Boxberger (first team) and Bruggeman (second team) were also selected as CRCA Pocock All-Americans, while the pair, Dines, Mulvey and junior Ailish Sheehan were all tabbed to CRCA South all-region teams.

The other four Irish all-ACC academic choices came from Notre Dame’s second varsity eight, which established the boat’s best ever finish (ninth place) last month at the NCAA Championship. Junior Rose Doerfler and sophomores Sarah Kappers, Kate Skorcz and Alex Techar rounded out the Irish all-academic team selections.
