ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Notre Dame track & field program opened the 2022 portion of their indoor season at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational at the University of Michigan on Saturday, January 15. The Notre Dame women took second place with 109 points, and the men took fourth with 45 points.
Competing against Michigan, Michigan State, and Indiana, the Irish claimed victories in five events including the women’s 3000 meter run, the women’s high jump, the women’s long jump, weight throw and men’s shot put.
Jacqueline Gaughan took home first in the 3000 with a time of 9:34.16 while teammates in the high jump and long jump also took home wins. Madison Schmidt took home the win with a mark of 1.73m in the high jump and Alaina Brady jumped for a mark of 5.82m winning the long jump.
Michael Shoaf took home wins in two events, the shot put and weight throw. He threw for a mark of 18.36m in the shot put and 19.10m in the weight throw. Rachel Tanczos also threw for a first place win as she hit a mark of 21.18m.
Other notable performances at the Harvey Simmons Invitational included Jadin O’Brien in the 60m Hurdles where she ran for a time of 8:48s. O’Brien also took second in the high jump with a mark of 1.63m.
In the men’s 400m the Irish took fifth through ninth with Max Frye leading the pack at 49.81. Joseph Dobrydney crossed the finish line at 49.95, Luis Cossio at 51.23, Matthew Cornelius at 51.23, and John Oleksak at 51.27. Luke Phillips ran for a time of 51.64.
