Saturday's clash between Notre Dame and North Carolina will showcase some of the elite players in all of college soccer.

Irish Women Head To Rutgers Looking For 10th Straight; Hanks On Verge Of 50-50 Milestone

Oct. 27, 2007

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team will wrap up its 2007 regular season on Sunday at Rutgers (1:00) looking to extend its winning streak to 10 games while hoping to complete an unbeaten record in the month of October for the seventh time in the program’s history (ND has not lost a game in Oct. since 2003). The Irish – who have not won their final 10 regular-season games since 1997 – are on the verge of registering the program’s 13th all-time double-digit winning streak and also will be looking to post their eighth all-time unbeaten record in BIG EAST regular-season play (currently 10-0-0). Despite Notre Dame’s 3-4-1 start, only 14 Division I teams currently own more wins that the Irish (12-4-1; four teams share the national lead with 14 wins).

Sunday’s game likewise could be an historic one for junior forward Kerri Hanks, who is two assists shy of becoming the 19th Division I player ever to reach 50 career goals and 50 assists (60G-48A). Hanks would join former Notre Dame standout Jenny Streiffer and former UNC star Mia Hamm as the only D-I players ever to reach the 50-50 milestone prior to their senior season.

Here are some quick notes on the ND team and players, heading into the regular-season finale:

WIN STREAK NEARS DOUBLE DIGITS – A win on Sunday over Rutgers would give Notre Dame a double-digit win streak for the 13th time in the program’s 20-year history and for the seventh time in the nine-year Randy Waldrum era (1999-2007) … it also would be ND’s third double-digit win streak in the past two seasons (the 2006 team had 13- and 12-game winning streaks) … the Irish actually have posted win streaks of 10 games or longer in each of the previous four seasons (2003-06), plus earlier double-digit win streaks in 1989, each year from 1993-97, and 2000 … here are the longest win streaks in ND women’s soccer history:

24 – Oct. 19, 1995 (11) – Oct. 11, 1996 (13)
17 – Sept. 21-Nov. 29, 1997
16 – Aug. 27-Oct. 18, 2000
15 – Aug. 27-Oct. 16, 2004
14 – Oct. 7-Nov. 18, 1994
14 – Oct. 20, 1992 (4) – Sept. 29, 1993 (9)
13 – Aug. 26-Oct. 8, 2006
13 – Oct. 2-Nov. 18, 2005
12 – Oct. 15-Dec. 1, 2006
12 – Sept. 21-Oc. 26, 2003
10 – Sept. 26-Oct. 18, 1989
9 – Sept. 28, 2007 – active

CLOSING STRONG – A win over Rutgers would mark just the second time in the program’s history, and first time since 1997, that the Irish have won their final 10 regular-season games … the 1997 team actually won its final 12 games during that regular season and then added five straight wins in the postseason, for the second-longest win streak (17 games) in the program’s history (longest in one season).

OCTOBERFEST – The first two games in the current win streak came in late September, followed by a 7-0-0 mark in October … six previous ND teams have gone unbeaten during the month of October, including two teams that won all of their Oct. games – in 1997 (7-0-0) and 2005 (8-00) – while four others were unbeaten in Oct. but had a tie (the 1994, 2000, 2004 and 2006 teams all were 8-0-1 in Oct.) … the first two seasons of ND women’s soccer yieled just a 13-7-1 record in October games but the Irish have an .873 win pct. in Oct. games during the past 18 seasons (135-17-6; from 1990-2007), for an all-time October record of 148-24-7 (.846) … the Irish had nearly a .900 win pct. in October games from 1994-2000 (69-7-4; .888), followed by subpar Oct. records in 2001 (5-2-00 and 2002 (5-3-0) … ND is riding a four-year unbeaten streak during the month of October (31-0-2) and is 40-1-2 in October spanning the 2003-07 seasons … the 2003 team lost its final regular-season game (3-2 vs. Michigan, on Oct. 29) while the 2004 NCAA championship team had a scoreless tie vs. Rutgers on Oct. 22 and the 2006 NCAA runner-up squad played a similar 0-0 game at Connecticut (Oct. 13) … here’s a look at ND’s yearly won-loss record during the month of October:

Notre Dame Women’s Soccer Yearly Records in October

8-0-1 in 2006 (tied UConn)
7-0-0 in 2007
Total: 148-24-7 (.846)

IRISH AIM FOR BIG EAST SEASON SWEEP – Notre Dame’s 13 seasons in the BIG EAST have produced a 117-8-4 record (.923) in BIG EAST regular-season games … the 2007 team will be looking to sweep all of the BIG EAST regular-season games for the fifth time in the program’s history (also 9-0-0 in 1996, 11-0-0 in 1997, an 9-0-0 in both 1999 and 2003, plus three other years with no losses but a tie in the BIG EAST regular season) … since a forgettable BIG EAST season in 2002 (8-3-3; 3-3-0 in division games), the Irish have been near-perfect in BIG EAST regular-season games over the past five seasons (48-1-2/.961, from 2003-07) … ND also owns a 27-2-0 all-time record in BIG EAST Tournament play and is 2-1-0 in the NCAAs vs. BIG EAST teams (all vs. UConn), for a total record of 146-10-4 (.925) vs. BIG EAST teams since joining the league in 1995 … ND’s 12 non-wins in BIG EAST regular-season play include five vs. UConn (2 losses, 3 ties), plus a loss and tie vs. Rutgers, and losses to only five other teams (Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, West Virginia and Marquette) … here’s a look at ND’s yearly record in regular-season games vs. BIG EAST teams:

2005 … 10-1-0 (1-4 loss at Marquette)
2006 … 10-0-1 (0-0 tie at UConn)
2007 … 10-0-0

WIN STREAK STAT NOTES – Notre Dame’s current nine-game win streak includes a 31-4 scoring edge (3.4 goals/gm; 0.44 goals-against avg.), plus the following statistical edges: 178-60 in shots (avg. of 19.8-6.7 per game), 91-21 in shots on goal (10.1-2.3) and 34-13 in corner kicks (3.8-1.4) … ND has scored 3-plus goals in seven games during the win streak (4-plus in four games) while winning by a margin of three-plus in six of those games (only two of the games have been one-run wins) … top scorers in the win streak include the junior forward duo of Brittany Bock (10G-3A) and Kerri Hanks (4G-7A), plus senior F Susan Pinnick (4G-2A), freshman F Rose Augustin (4G-1A), senior M Ashley Jones (1G-5A) and junior left back Elise Weber (1G-4A) … 11 different ND players have scored goals in the win streak (also two each from sophomore F Michele Weissenhofer and junior M Becca Mendoza, plus singles goals by senior F/M Amanda Cinalli, sophomore M Courtney Rosen and freshman center back Lauren Fowlkes).

HANKS ON VERGE OF 50-50 MILESTONE – Junior forward Kerri Hanks (60G-48A) is two assists shy of becoming the third Division I women’s soccer player ever to reach 50 career goals and 50 assists prior to her senior season (16 others have reached 50-50 as seniors) … former ND standout M/F Jenny Streiffer reached 50-50 as a junior (51G-56A), in the 18th game of the 1998 season (a 6-1 win over Wisconsin, on Oct. 30) … former UNC great Mia Hamm is the only other D-I player to reach 50G-50A as a junior (she ended the 1992 season with 77G-56A) … Hamm played her first two seasons at UNC in 1989 and ’90 but did not play college soccer in 1991 (due to U.S. National Team commitments) … the other ND players who have reached 50-50 include midfielders Cindy Daws (61G-67A; ’93-’96) and Anne Makinen (65G-65A; ’97-’00), plus forward Katie Thorlakson (55G-73A; ’02-’05).

50-50 PROPOSITIONS – North Carolina (8) and Notre Dame (4) have combined to produce two-thirds (12 of 18) of the players in the 50G-50A club … dating back to the 1999 season, ND has totaled four players with 50G-50A while UNC has two (plus one each from Santa Clara, William & Mary, Florida and Penn State in that nine-year span) … current ND junior F Kerri Hanks (60G-48A) is close to joining the 50-50 club and has logged 69 career games played … Jenny Streiffer holds the ND record for quickest to 50G-50A (67 GP) … Hanks is on pace to reach 50-50 quicker than the other three ND players in that exclusive group: Anne Makinen (reached in 78 GP), Cindy Daws (84) and Katie Thorlakson (86).

IN RANGE FOR 60-60 – With 60 career goals already in the bag, Kerri Hanks conceivably could reach the 60G-60A milestone this season with a productive and extended postseason … only five players in D-I women’s soccer history (and none since 1999) have reached 60-60: ND’s Cindy Daws (’93-’96; 61G-67A) and Jenny Streiffer (’96-’99; 70G-71A), UC Santa Barbara’s Carin Jennings (’83-’86; 102G-60A), UNC’s Mia Hamm (’89-’90, ’92-’93; 103G-72A) and Santa Clara’s Mandy Clemens (’96-’99; 67G-65A).

60 – Jenny Heft (ND; ’96-’98)

DOUBLE-DOUBLE TRIPLE – Current Notre Dame junior forward Kerri Hanks is the third ND player ever to post double-digit goals and 10-plus assists in each of her first three seasons (28G-10A in ’05, 22G-22A in ’06, 10G-11A in ’07) … the first to do so was Monica Gerardo (20G-11A in ’95, 23G-13A in ’96, 10G-12A in ’97), followed by Anne Makinen with 23G-12A in 1997, 15G-17A in ’98 and 13G-12A in ’98.

TRIPLE 10-GOAL SCORERS – Notre Dame’s current team includes three different players who all have posted double-digit goals in each of their first three seasons: senior F/M Amanda Cinalli (10 in ’04 and ’05, 11 in ’06, plus 3 in ’07), junior M/F Brittany Bock (12 in ’05 and ’05, 11 in ’07) and junior F Kerri Hanks (28 in ’05, 22 in ’06, 10 in ’07) … they are three of 11 all-time ND players to post double-digit goals in each of their first three seasons, with the others including Susie Zilvitis, Rosella Guerrero, Michelle McCarthy, Monica Gerardo, Jenny Heft, Anne Makinen, Meotis Erikson and Amanda Guertin … six ND players have reached 10-plus goals in all four of their seasons with the Irish: McCarthy, Gerardo, Heft, Makinen, Erikson and Guertin.

SCORING STREAKS – A goal or assist in Sunday’s game at Rutgers would give Kerri Hanks a nine-game point streak, which would tie the second-longest of her career … she had points in nine straight games during the second half of the 2005 season and then had points in the final 13 games of 2006 … Hanks’ former teammate Katie Thorlakson is the only ND player ever to have three different point streaks of nine games or longer (14, 12 and 9) … if Hanks can push her current streak to 10 games, she would join Thorlakson as the only ND players with multiple double-digit point streaks during their careers.
