Irish Track & Field Wrap Up ACC Indoor Championships

CLEMSON, S.C. – The men’s and women’s track team rounded out the first leg of the championship portion of the indoor season schedule with the ACC Indoor Championships on Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Complex.

The Irish competed well in the final day of the conference competition, finding their way to three All-ACC honors, four personal bests, and one season best performance between the men and women. 

Sophomore Michael Shoaf and senior John Stefan kicked off the day for the Irish in the men’s shot put. Shoaf finished ninth with a season best mark of 17.15m and Stefan’s 16.33m effort was good for 12th place. 

In the women’s mile run, Annasophia Keller crossed the line eighth, posting a time of 4:50.57. 

Back on the men’s side, Samuel Voelz, earned his way onto the podium, placing second in the 800m run by a mere five one-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:48.39. 

The men’s 3,000m run saw solid performances from four Irish athletes. Matthew Carmody, Carter Cheesman and Tom Seitzer each set personal best marks with their efforts on the day. Carmody finished third overall with one of only four sub-eight minute times (7:59.44) in the race. With that finish, the junior also achieved a first team All-ACC nod. Cheeseman earned a seventh place finish with a time of 8:07.91, and Seitzer’s 8:11.49 was good for 13th. Junior Zach Kreft finished 17th, crossing the line in 8:16.97.

Sophomore Olivia Markezich set a personal best in the women’s 3,000m with a time of 9:11.17, good for a fifth place finish and a spot on the All-ACC second team. Teammate Annasophia Keller finished in 10:06.88.

In the women’s shot put competition, senior Rachel Tanczos threw her way to an eighth place finish with a mark of 15.27m, and junior Alesis Juntunen’s 13.85m throw was good for 14th. 

Over the three days of the ACC Championships, the Irish earned 12 All-ACC honors between the men and women. Of the men’s seven, five were first team recipients and two earned spots on the second team. The women competed their way to two first team honors and three second team. Matthew Carmody achieved All-Conference recognition in both the 3000M run and 5000M run. 

Additionally, the Irish set 22 personal best records over the course of the three days. The women tallied seven of those efforts, with two coming from freshman Alaina Brady in the women’s pentathlon and long jump. On the men’s side, Tom Seitzer worked his way to personal marks in both the 3000M run and 5000M run. 

Pole vaulter Colton Crum posted the lone victory on the weekend for the Irish. 

Next on the schedule for the Irish are the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas, March 11-13 where they will wrap up the spring season.
