Irish Track and Field Set to Compete at Ole Miss Invitational Saturday

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Irish track and field squads will try to add to their growing list of NCAA regional qualifiers this weekend as they compete at the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday at the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex in Oxford, Miss.

Events get underway at 11:30 a.m. (CDT) Saturday with the men’s hammer throw and women’s javelin. The women’s 5,000 meters begins the running events at 2:00 p.m.

Along with Notre Dame and Ole Miss, Alabama, Jackson State, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Tulane and Vanderbilt will compete at Saturday’s meet.

The Irish are coming off competition at the Mike Poehlein Invitational at Purdue, where senior Mary Saxer broke her own school record with a 4.30m (14-1 1/4) height in the women’s pole vault. That mark also broke the Mike Poehlein Invitational and Dave Rankin Track records.

Saxer is currently tied for first nationally with her 4.30m (14-1 1/4) pole vault mark, while senior Patrick Smyth holds the second-fastest men’s 10,000-meter time in the nation this season.
