Jan. 9, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s track and field teams will return to the track for the first time in over a month when they compete at the Indiana Opener Saturday in Bloomington.

The one-day meet will be held at the Gladstein Fieldhouse, with running events beginning at 11 a.m. and field events kicking off at 11:30.

The Irish haven’t competed since Dec. 5 when they hosted the Blue and Gold Meet at the Loftus Center. Notre Dame found success at home with numerous athletes hitting BIG EAST qualifying marks. Senior Mary Saxer won the women’s pole vault and qualified for the NCAAs with a mark of 4.00m.

The Irish track and field squads return All-Americans Alyissa Hasan in the pentathlon and distance runner Patrick Smyth. Also returning are several all-BIG EAST honorees, including pole vaulters Saxer and Matt Schipper, throwers Anna Weber and Dennis Veres and sprinters Cora Dayon and Balazs Molnar.

Results from the Indiana Opener will be available at www.und.com following Saturday’s meet.
