FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Freshman Tyler Hock (Ocala, Fla./Forest) carded an even-par 71, helping the Notre Dame men’s golf team move into a tie for eighth place after Sunday’s opening round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, being played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club of Tennessee (par 71/7,100 yards) in Franklin, Tenn. The Irish posted a team total of eight-over par 292, tying them with Augusta State and North Florida and placing the trio nine strokes behind first-round leader Mississippi on the tightly-bunched 18-team leaderboard. In fact, only 10 shots separate first place from 11th place through the opening 18 holes.

Hock, who is coming off an 11th-place tie in his last outing at the Coca-Cola Duke Classic two weeks ago, was particularly sharp on the par-5 holes Sunday afternoon, going a tournament-best five-under par on the longest layouts, and finding himself four shots back of current individual leader Jake Amos of Augusta State, who carded an opening-round 67 to pace the 93-man field.

Junior Josh Sandman (Greensboro, N.C./Southeast Guilford) is tied for 32nd place after shooting a two-over par 73 on Sunday. Sophomores Doug Fortner (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and Kyle Willis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) are one stroke further back in a tie for 41st place. Senior tri-captain Greg Rodgers (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul’s School) is tied for 77th place following his first-round 78 (+7). Senior tri-captain Mike King (Sidney, Ohio/Sidney) is playing this week as an individual participant and is in 87th place after opening with a nine-over par 80.

Notre Dame will be back on course Monday beginning at 8 a.m. CT (9 a.m. ET in South Bend) for the second round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate, with the Irish contingent scheduled to begin on the first tee. Complete results will be posted on the official Notre Dame athletics web site (www.und.com) upon completion of the day’s action.
