Irish Rowers Face Another Challenging Schedule in 2007

Feb. 15, 2007

Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame rowing team takes aim at a second consecutive NCAA team bid in 2007 as it embarks on a very challenging schedule that will feature many of the top rowing programs in the country. Head coach Martin Stone and the Irish will also look to claim their fourth consecutive BIG EAST team title this spring.

Notre Dame once again will open up the spring portion of its season in Knoxville, Tenn., on Sat., March 17 when it takes on Tennessee and Minnesota. The following day (Sun., March 18), Notre Dame will meet Cincinnati and Alabama in Oak Ridge, Tenn., at the Melton Lake course (site of both the South/Central Regional and NCAA championships this year).

The Irish travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a regatta against Midwest rivals Michigan and Michigan State on Sat., March 24 and then heads to Indianapolis two weeks later on Sat., April 7 where they will race against Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue.

The following weekend, Sat.-Sun., April 14-15, Notre Dame will compete at one of the season’s top meets when it heads to Redwood Shores, Calif., for the Windermere Real Estate Regatta. This competition will prove to be one of the year’s top regattas. Among the participating teams will be Stanford, Washington, Washington State, California and UCLA. The Irish will open up against two-time defending national champion California on Saturday morning and will race Stanford later that afternoon before conclude the weekend competition against UCLA on Sunday morning.

Two weeks following that race, Notre Dame will take on Princeton and George Washington in Princeton, N.J., on Sat., April 28 then will race the next day (Sun., April 29) at the BIG EAST Championships in Worcester, Mass. The Irish will be looking to claim an unprecedented fourth conference team title at this year’s championship.

The final tuneup of the season will be the South/Central Regional Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn., which will be held Sat.-Sun., May 12-13. The NCAA Championships will be held two weeks later (Fri.-Sun., May 25-27) at that same site.

“We’ve once again put together a schedule that will be very challenging and will help us gauge our improvement throughout the season,” Stone says. “Every year we’ve tried to upgrade our schedule. I believe that this year’s schedule is very tough and one that will test us throughout the spring.”
