NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 24 Notre Dame women’s soccer team continued its hot start to the 2021 season on Saturday night. The Fighting Irish (7-1-1) feasted on the Syracuse Orange (4-3-1) via a 4-0 shutout inside Alumni Stadium.
With today’s victory, Notre Dame moved to 17-0-1 all-time against Syracuse, with a 10-0-0 mark at home. In fact, over the aforementioned 10 home games, the Irish own a 29-0 goal differential.
Freshman Katie Coyle shone bright under the Saturday night lights by recording her first career assist and goal.
How It Happened
It was all Notre Dame in tonight’s ACC opener as the Irish outshot the Orange 27-1.
It was none other than Notre Dame’s leading goal scorer Sammi Fisher who drew first blood in just the seventh minute. Freshman Korbin Albert started the play by working the ball through a couple of defenders in the right corner. Albert back passed to Coyle who then sent a cross to Fisher near the penalty marker. Fisher hit a volley off the post and in.
Goal No. 2 came in the 34th minute. It started with a beautiful ball into the box from defender Waniya Hudson. Audrey Weiss then sent a header straight to Kiki Van Zanten who put it past the keeper for her second goal of the season.
Coyle then earned her first career goal the hard way in the 60th minute. After taking out a Syracuse defender on a 50-50 ball, Coyle then sprinted past another and pushed it past the keeper for the goal.
Another freshman by the name of Sophia Fisher also got in the scoring action tonight. The Arizona native took advantage of a failed Syracuse clearance and volleyed the ball past a diving keeper.
