NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Fresh off a ninth place finish at the 2014 NCAA Championship last weekend in Indianapolis, tying the best team NCAA regatta result in program history, the coaching staff of the University of Notre Dame rowing team claimed a top regional award earlier this week.
Irish associate head coach Joe Schlosberg and assistant coach Marnie Stahl were named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) South Region Staff of the Year on Monday. The citation marked the fourth time members of the Notre Dame coaching staff have earned regional recognition from the CRCA, as head coach Martin Stone was named the CRCA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2002 and 2006, and former assistant Pam Mork was selected as the Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2002.
Schlosberg completed his 13th season at Notre Dame, while Stahl capped her ninth year on the Irish coaching staff during the 2013-14 campaign. Both helped Notre Dame claim six of the final eight BIG EAST Conference Coaching Staff of the Year awards (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013) issued by the conference, as well as guiding the Irish to 10 straight BIG EAST Championship regatta titles from 2004-13.
Along with the team’s ninth place result at the NCAA Championship at Eagle Creek Park on June 1, the pair helped lead Notre Dame to a runner-up finish in its inaugural entry into the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., in May.
Schlosberg has specialized in the development of Notre Dame’s top quad boat since the 2011 season, having also coached the Irish novice boats and second varsity eight during his tenure. Stahl completed her third season in charge of Notre Dame’s First-Years program, one of the most integrated novice programs in the country, in 2013-14, as well as overseeing the Irish third varsity eight and novice four boat crews.
The Notre Dame coaching staff now moves on to the consideration pool for the CRCA National Assistant Coach of the Year award. Other regional winners who reached the national ballot are Indiana (Central Region), Navy (Mid-Atlantic Region), Massachusetts (New England Region) and Stanford (West Region).
