Notre Dame freshman midfielder Ashley Jones was all smiles earlier this summer after leading her state ODP and club teams to national titles.

The Notre Dame women’s soccer team’s Freshman Focus series wraps up today with a visit from midfielder Ashley Jones. During the past few months, Jones experienced the unique double of winning national titles with her Olympic Development Progrmam state team (California-South) and her club team (Southern California United). Jones then turned in an impressive all-around performance during the six-game Brazilian tour, scoring twice and adding three assists while showcasing her diverse offensive skills. Once I entered 8th grade, I had to make a decision between softball and soccer. I chose soccer because it was so much more fun. I loved the competitiveness and excitement of the game. Who is your favorite soccer player? – David Beckham What are your rituals or superstitions before a game? – none What is your favorite “pump-up” song before a game? – “Taking Back Sunday” Favorite Soccer Move – “Nutmeg” How would you describe yourself on the field and off it? – On the field, I work hard and I am extremely competitive. Off the field, I enjoy hanging out with friends, snowboarding, wakeboarding and going to the beach. Now describe the other three freshmen who are on this trip with you – Lauren, Amanda and Jannica all are really talented players. They also are so nice and we already are having so much fun together.

How awesome was Lauren Karas at the 2004 ODP Nationals, where your Cal-South teams edged her North Texas team in the final (1-0)? – Lauren played so well at Nationals. She made many incredible saves that earned her the Golden Glove Award. What are your thoughts on the Brazil trip? – The Brazil trip has been so much fun. I have enjoyed getting to know the team. They are incredibly nice and fun ot be around. Experiencing the sport of soccer, as well as life in another country, has been very interesting. What dorm will you be living in at Notre Dame? – Lyons What is something about you that people may not know? – I have a golden retriever named Kalli. Why is California soccer the best? – California has a large population base and the sport of soccer is continuing to grow. Additionally, the competition in California is amazing. There are so many great teams and great players and the leagues are very organized.
