Field Performances Highlight Day One Of Joe Walker Classic

OXFORD, Miss. – The Irish kicked off the weather shortened first day of the Joe Walker Classic hosted by Ole Miss by posting two first place finishes by the end of the events Friday evening.

The men’s field events took two wins this Friday. Notre Dame men’s javelin topped the podium when John Keenan threw a distance of 66.80m, taking first place. Colton Crum also won the men’s pole vault, reaching a height of 4.98m.

In the men’s shot put, Michael Shoaf took second with a throw of 17.57m. Logan Kusky placed second in the men’s hammer throwing a distance of 61.55m.

Notre Dame also got off to a great start on the first day of the heptathlon as Alaina Brady sits in second through four events with 3,106 points while teammate Madison Schmidt is right behind in third with 2,999 points. The two took the top spots in the high jump, as Madison Schmidt cleared 1.74m while Brady posted a height of 1.65m.

Other notable performances were turned in by both the men’s and women’s competitors in the 3,000m steeplechase events. Lauren Sapone finished third with a time of 10:07.92 and on the men’s side Quinn Gallagher crossed fourth in 9:00.91.

The second and final day of the Joe Walker Classic starts at 11:15 a.m. ET on Saturday for the Irish with the women’s heptathlon.
