Ashley Armstrong Named BIG EAST Women's Golf Player Of The Week

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) has been honored as the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Player of the Week for the second consecutive week the conference office announced Thursday afternoon.

Armstrong, who currently ranks 74th nationally, earns the accolade after guiding the No. 24 Fighting Irish to it’s first tournament title of the season at the 54-hole Briar’s Creek Invitational on the Golf Club of Briar’s Creek’s course in John’s Island, S.C earlier this week.

Armstrong carded a one-over-par 217 (74-71-72), topping a total of 95 competitors to secure her third career tournament title.

Battling past gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour through the two-day span, Armstrong led Notre Dame (317-300-289-906) past second-place Maryland (312-310-292-914) by eight strokes and held off third-place Coastal Carolina (305-304-307-916) by 10 strokes in the 18-team field.

Armstrong finished three strokes better than second-place finisher No. 45 Laura Wearn from Furman (77-76-67-220) and owned a four-stroke margin over Coastal Carolina’s No. 90 Brittany Henderson, who finished third (71-74-76-221) in the tournament.

Playing a combined 24 holes on the final day due to a suspension of play during the opening rounds, Armstrong racked up a total of seven birdies and pared a total of 14 holes.

Armstrong tied for first in par three scoring (3.00,E), par four scoring (4.13, +4) and was second in made pars (37) during the two-day tournament.

Armstrong additionally defeated seven top-100 foes and four top-50 opponents throughout the weekend.

The sophomore has now accumulated a total of six rounds at even or under par this season.

The Irish compete next at the DAC/SMU Invitational at the Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas, Texas, April 5-7.
