CLEMSON, S.C. – The No. 6 Notre Dame women’s soccer (7-1-0, 0-1-0) put more shots on goal than the Clemson Tigers (5-1-2, 1-0-0) on Thursday night, but unfortunately suffered their first loss of the season, dropping a 2-0 decision. The Tigers scored two goals on just four shots on net.

Total shots wise, it was 14-apiece for both sides with Notre Dame boasting six shots on net. Ultimately, it was the Tigers taking advantage of transition offense that bested the Irish in the start of ACC play.

How It Happened

Clemson had one shot on goal in the first half but that’s all they needed. It occurred in the 21st minute, catching the Irish defense in transition. It marked the first time the Irish have trailed all season.

The Irish boasted three shots on goal including two great chances from both its forwards, Olivia Wingate and Maddie Mercado.

Clemson then scored its second goal in the 58th minute, marking the first time this season the Irish have allowed multiple goals.

The Irish did its best to fight back and came close, as Korbin Albert fired off a shot from distance that hit off the crossbar. Furthermore, the richochet almost found Wingate who was crashing toward the goal.

Wingate also displayed a great individual effort in the second half. With 22 minutes left, Wingate dribbled nearly the length of the field, beating multiple defenders before putting a shot on net.

Lastly, Mackenzie Wood started in net and recorded two saves.

Up Next

The Irish will get some rest this weekend and have Sunday off before hosting No. 7 Virginia in a top-10 matchup at Alumni Stadium. First touch is at 7 pm ET on ACCNX.
