COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tasked with matchups against the top team in the country and another solid foe just outside of the national rankings, the University of Notre Dame rowing team faced a competitive challenge at the Big Ten/Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Double Dual on Saturday. The No. 14 Irish emerged with six race victories combined against No. 1 Ohio State and No. RV Michigan State at the Griggs Reservoir during the inter-conference regatta that also featured No. 18 Louisville representing the ACC.

Notre Dame took home a second novice eight race victory to open the morning session against Ohio State. The Irish crew consisting of coxswain Samantha Hedrick, Jeanne Farnan, Elena Brindley, Kristen McEneaney, Patricia Walsh, Stephanie Dubois, Lauren Matchett, Clare Scantling and Megan McKeon crossed the finish line in 6:52.73, downing the Buckeyes by more than seven seconds (7:00.16).

Ohio State responded immediately with a win in the first novice eight, clocking a time of 6:44.04. Notre Dame coxswain Dana Capotosto, Carson Canonie, Christine McGough, Kate Trankina, Christine Schindele-Murayama, Victoria Ryan, Bridget Adam, Erin Dolan and Mairead Dunne crossed the line in 7:05.69.

Notre Dame closed the gap with Ohio State during the second/third varsity four heat, earning a runner-up race result. Coxswain Jill Ryan, Elizabeth Walter, Madelynn Conlin, Meredith Swartz and Moira Hamilton posted a time of 7:16.62.

The Irish first varsity four followed with a second place result against the top-ranked Buckeyes, who clocked a winning readout of 7:13.35. Notre Dame coxswain Mikaela Prego, Bailey Amenabar, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Katherine Lumetta and Rose Doerfler completed the course in 7:34.29.

Ohio State added another victory in the second varsity eight, racing past the line in 6:23.95. Coxswain Reilly Kearney, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sarah Russel, Katie Skorcz, Emily Horton, Madeline Loper, Gretchen Bruggeman, Ellen Gleadow and Hilary Shinnick placed second with a time of 6:38.48.

The first varsity eights closed the morning race session with Ohio State rowing to victory in 6:10.65. Notre Dame’s crew of coxswain Alex Techar, Carlee Beckler, Sarah Kappers, Catherine Wagner, Joanna Mulvey, Alexis Olson, Elizabeth Kelley, Anna Kottkamp and Ailish Sheehan logged a time of 6:29.48.

Notre Dame really found its stride during the afternoon session against Michigan State, adding five more head-to-head wins to its regatta total. The Irish second novice eight opened the racing with time of 7:08.00 to take the event win. Coxswain Erin Coscia, Jeanne Farnan, Elena Brindley, Kristen McEneaney, Patricia Walsh, Stephanie Dubois, Lauren Matchett, Clare Scantling and Megan McKeon outpaced Michigan State by nearly 19 seconds (7:26.52).

Michigan State answered during the first novice eight, rolling to an open-water win in 6:45.14. Coxswain Savannah Ryder, Carson Canonie, Christine McGough, Kate Trankina, Christine Schindele-Murayama, Victoria Ryan, Bridget Adam, Erin Dolan and Mairead Dunne guided Notre Dame to a time of 7:04.51.

It was all Notre Dame the rest of the way, beginning with a victory in the second/third varsity four. Coxswain Jill Ryan, Elizabeth Walter, Madelynn Conlin, Meredith Swartz and Moira Hamilton cruised to a win in 7:26.93 over the Michigan State entry (7:35.19).

The Notre Dame first varsity four enjoyed a solid afternoon performance against the Spartans, taking the race victory by more than 16 full seconds. Irish coxswain Mikaela Prego, Bailey Amenabar, Treasa O’Tighearnaigh, Katherine Lumetta and Rose Doerfler claimed the win in 7:19.09.

The Irish added another victory in second varsity eight racing during the penultimate competition between Notre Dame and Michigan State. Coxswain Reilly Kearney, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sarah Russel, Katie Skorcz, Emily Horton, Madeline Loper, Gretchen Bruggeman, Ellen Gleadow and Hilary Shinnick (6:36.29) downed the Spartan entry (6:42.81).

Notre Dame’s first varsity eight copped the final top finish of the day, posting a 6:27.36 winning readout at the finish line. Coxswain Alex Techar, Carlee Beckler, Sarah Kappers, Catherine Wagner, Joanna Mulvey, Alexis Olson, Elizabeth Kelley, Anna Kottkamp and Ailish Sheehan outpaced Michigan State (6:35.74) by more than eight and a half seconds.
