NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Sophomore forward Zach Auguste (Marlborough, Mass.) will be sidelined four to six weeks with a broken left hand.
Auguste fractured his hand in practice on Oct. 10 and x-rays earlier this week confirmed that he had suffered a break. He will likely miss Notre Dame’s first two exhibition games against Indianapolis (Oct. 28) and Tusculum (Nov. 1).
As a freshman in 2012-13, Auguste played in 25 of Notre Dame’s 35 contests and averaged 3.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 10.7 minutes per game. He shot 52.0 percent from the field as he connected on 39-of-75-shots. Auguste scored a career-high 15 points (his only double-digit scoring game of the season) while playing 21 minutes in a loss to Marquette on March 2. He grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in Notre Dame’s 62-41 win over Cincinnati on Feb. 24.
Auguste played 10-plus minutes in 15 contests during the season, including 36 in the 104-101 five-overtime win over Louisville on Feb. 9. In Notre Dame’s second-round loss to Iowa State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, he played 16 minutes, scored six points and grabbed seven rebound.
“This is really unfortunate for Zach that he suffered this injury because he had such a great summer and preseason for us,” 14-year head coach Mike Brey says. “Zach is going to be a key for us on the frontline this season. I love the energy and passion he has brought to practice. Since the end of last season, he’s been really focused on improving all aspects of his game and he’s really matured. Zach knows and understands that he’s a big piece of the puzzle for us this year and that we are counting on him at both ends of the floor.”
