Women's Swimming Falls To Indiana 176-124

Bloomington, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving team (1-1) suffered its first dual-meet loss of the season at Indiana on Thursday evening, as the home team defeated the Irish 176-124. Notre Dame is now 1-1 on the season, while Indiana improves to 2-0.

Senior Meghan Perry-Eaton provided the highlight for Notre Dame, easily sweeping both diving boards to claim two of Notre Dame’s five event victories. Perry-Eaton won one-meter diving with a total of 285.15 and three-meter with 283.65 points. Sophomores Samantha Raneri and Casey Pepak finished fourth and fifth in each board, respectively.

Indiana jumped out to a strong lead in the meet by claiming victories in the first six events on the schedule. Freshman Ann Barton posted Notre Dame’s first victory in the 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:03.29. Junior Sarah Alwen finished third in the race (2:05.57).

Notre Dame was able to claim second and third in the next event, the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Courtney Choura (1:05.57) and freshman Jessica Stephens (1:05.61) finished virtually side-by-side.

Another freshman, Katie Carroll, claimed Notre Dame’s second event victory in the 100 butterfly (56.21), finishing ahead of teammate Lisa Garcia (57.07). Junior Brooke Taylor provided a sweep of the fly events for Notre Dame later in the meet, finishing first in the 200 race with a time of 2:03.90.

IU shut the door on the meet with victories in both relays. The Hoosier team won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:26.84, ahead of Notre Dame’s team of junior Danielle Hulick, Carroll, freshman Rebecca Grove and Alwen in 3:28.80. Indiana’s 400 medley relay touched in 3:50.12, followed by the Irish squad of Hulick, Stephens, Garcia and Carroll in 3:51.03.

The women’s swimming and diving team continues its road trip on Friday, Oct. 7, with a dual meet at Pittsburgh (4:30 p.m.).
