NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team won 10 matches Friday in the Eck Classic at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. Four Irish players posted 3-0 records on the first day of competition. The Eck Classic continues Saturday with Notre Dame taking on Texas A&M at 9 a.m. and then Indiana, in doubles only, at 1:30 p.m. The Irish also are scheduled to have one doubles match against Arizona at 4 p.m.

Senior Nina Vaughan (Corona del Mar, Calif.) and freshman Sarah Jane Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla.) each won a pair of singles matches and a doubles tilt without being defeated, while sophomores Alicia Salas (Engelwood, Colo.) and Emily Neighbours (Indianapolis, Ind.) picked up two doubles wins and also were victorious in singles. Sophomore Caylan Leslie (Newport Beach, Calif.) won two doubles matches, but did not compete in singles because of a shoulder injury.

Connelly gained singles victories over Texas A&M’s Leah Killen (6-4, 6-1) and Arizona’s Perrine Pernin (6-4, 6-0) and teamed with Salas to beat Pernin and Marie-Pier Pouliot 8-2 in doubles play. Salas beat Pouliot 6-2, 6-0 in singles and teamed with Neighbours earlier to knock off the Texas A&M team of Killen and Danielle Lee 8-5. Neighbours won in singles over Arizona’s Danielle Stadelmann 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 and also paired with Leslie to beat Stadelmann and Daniela Torres 8-2. Leslie and Vaughan downed the Aggie pair of Roberta Spencer and Marjorie Terburgh 8-4 and Vaughan beat Torres 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in singles.

Neighbours, Salas and Connelly are three young players who were not a regular part of Notre Dame’s lineup a season ago, but have had much success this fall, especially in singles action. Connelly is 8-2 in singles, leading the Irish in victories in her first collegiate action. Salas reached the round of 16 in singles at last month’s Omni Hotels Region IV Championships and has won five of her last six singles contests. Neighbours improved to 4-1 in singles this season and 15-2 in her career.

For the 20th time in the history of the program, Notre Dame is hosting a women’s tennis tournament. The Eck Classic, the most recent incarnation, has been held in the fall of nine of the past 10 seasons in the Eck Tennis Pavilion on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. It was changed this year from a “flight” format to a “hidden dual” format. Teams play simulated matches against each other, but there are no team scores recorded.
