Women's Lacrosse Announces 2006 Spring Schedule

Jan. 10, 2006

Notre Dame, Ind. – Notre Dame women’s lacrosse coach Tracy Coyne has announced the 2006 women’s lacrosse schedule for the upcoming spring season.

The Irish will once again play an ambitious and aggressive schedule that will feature four teams that advanced to the NCAA tournament, including defending national champion Northwestern, and eight teams that finished the 2005 season ranked among the top 20 in the nation.

The Irish open the regular season with a trip to the West coast where they will face the University of California and Stanford in a weekend series, Feb. 24 and 26. Notre Dame then returns to South Bend for four straight home games at the Loftus Center, starting on Thursday, March 2 versus Ohio University for a 4:30 p.m. game.

The Irish will open the BIG EAST conference schedule on Thursday, March 16 when they play the league’s newest member; Loyola (MD) is a 7:00 p.m. game at Wellington, Fla. That game will also be televised nationally on College Sports Television (CSTV).

“We’re very happy with our schedule for the coming season,” says Irish coach Tracy Coyne.

“We have a challenging schedule that includes four teams that made the NCAA tournament a year ago in Northwestern, Duke, Georgetown and Syracuse. The BIG EAST should be one of the toughest leagues in the country, especially with the addition of Loyola as an associate member. There definitely aren’t any easy games but I expect our team to be ready for the challenge.”

The 2006 schedule also features three first time opponents for the Irish, as they will face Lehigh, Canisius and Loyola for the first time in the program’s 10-year history.

The seven teams that the Irish will face this season that finished in the top 20 last year include: Northwestern (#1), Duke (#2), Georgetown (#4), Syracuse (#12), Connecticut (#16), Stanford (#18), Vanderbilt (#19) and Loyola (#20).

Notre Dame comes into the 2006 season ranked 17th in the first preseason poll done by Lacrosse Magazine.
