NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame senior guard Niele Ivey, a native of St. Louis, Mo., and product of Cor Jesu High School, has been named a finalist for the College Sportswoman of the Year award which is being presented by the St. Louis Association for Girls and Women Sport. The winner will be announced on Thursday, February 10 at the Regal Riverfront Hotel in St. Louis.
Nominees for the award are those from the St. Louis area who have distinguished themselves in the community and the athletic arena.
Ivey, a co-captain on this year 1999-2000 Notre Dame women’s basketball team which is ranked fifth nationally with a 15-2 record, was a four-year starter at Cor Jesu where she averaged 24.0 ppg. and 8.0 rpg. in her final scholastic season while earning USA Today Missouri player of the year honors in 1996. She finished her four-year career owning school records for points (1,977), rebounds, (813), assists (600), steals (603) and blocked shots (95).
As a junior in 1994-95, she led Cor Jesu to the 1995 Class 4A state championship as her team finished with a perfect 31-0 record. Following that campaign, she was named the Missouri state player of the year.
Ivey, a three-year starter on the Irish team, currently is one of four players averaging double figures with an 11.4 scoring average. She leads the team in both assists and steals and currently ranks ninth nationally with a 7.0 assist average. Ivey was a third-team all-BIG EAST selection in 1999.
