Women's Golf Tied for 10th at Lady Northern

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame women’s golf team stands tied for 10th place out of 14 teams after first-round action Friday at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate, the first tournament to be held at the Pete Dye-designed Kampen Golf Course.

The tournament continues with 18 holes on Saturday before concluding with a final round on Sunday.

Notre Dame and Iowa posted matching team totals of 337 in the play-six/count-four format and remain within striking distance of ninth-place Minnesota (333) and eighth-place Purdue (329).

Irish sophomore Mary Klein (Kokomo, Ind.) used a strong 38 on her front nine to post a 79 on the par-72, 5,996-yard course, placing her in a tie with Northwestern’s Emily Gilley for 12th in the 87-player field.

Other Notre Dame scores included an 83 from junior captain Andrea Klee and an 85 from sophomore newcomer Shane Smith, a transfer from SMU. Junior Brigid Fisher (90), freshman Kristin McMurtrie (90) and sophomore Becca Schloss (96) rounded out Notre Dame’s first-round effort.

Northwestern posted a 311 team total and holds a four shot lead over Ohio State, followed by Indiana (318), Michigan State (322), Wisconsin (322), Penn State (323) and Michigan (324). Northwestern’s Christie Hermes (73) is the individual leader, holding a two-shot lead on Wisconsin’s Allie Bloomquist and a three-shot lead on four others. TEAM STANDINGS (18 holes of 54): 1.
