Volleyball Nets Stellar Recruiting Class

Nov. 23, 2010

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame head volleyball coach Debbie Brown recently announced the addition of three high school student-athletes to the Irish program who have signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the University beginning in the fall of 2011.

The trio of Toni Alugbue (pronounced UH-lube-WAY), Jeni Houser and Meg Vonderhaar (pronounced VONN-derr-HARR) is poised to give Notre Dame plenty of depth all around the court for the next four years.

“I know that this is an incredibly strong class for us, and I’m so eager to get them here on campus,” Brown said. “Each of them, individually, brings to much to the program. And collectively, it’s such a great all-around class. They are very polished and accomplished, and we’re going to see really good things out of them. The physical skills they bring to our program are tremendous, and their competitive fight and spirit will be a huge bonus for us.”

“Toni is relatively new to the sport but has a tremendous upside. She has played middle and outside and has great versatility as she can play all the way around the court. Since she has played a number of positions and she’s developed a number of different shots. Her height above the net is phenomenal. Toni is a great jumper, physically strong and has a great arm. When watching her during the summer, I don’t know that I’ve seen a better right-side blocker. She gets her hands so far over the net and can absolutely shut down opponents.”

Debbie Brown on Houser …
“The thing I’m most excited about for Jeni is her competitive fire. She simply refuses to lose. That type of attitude is contagious. And physically, she’s very, very developed. She hits the ball really hard behind a great arm. Her feel for blocking is very strong and she has great hands over the net. It addition to that, she’s developed into a six-rotation player who can pass, play defense and hit out of the backrow. She hits the slide really well, so we went to keep her in a position where we can take advantage of that. We expect big things from her and know she’ll be able to deliver.”
