Ust's RBI Triple and Run Scored Help USA Baseball Beat Mexico 10-4

June 8, 1998

TUCSON, Ariz. – Notre Dame sophomore third baseman Brant Ust (Redmond, Wash.) stroked an RBI triple in the second inning and scored on James McAuley’s groundout, helping the USA Baseball national team post a 10-4 win Sunday over the Mexico national team at Hi Corbett Field.

Team USA–which opened play Saturday with a 7-2 win over Mexico–is scheduled to continue its series with Mexico on Monday night, with Baylor sophomore righthander Jason Jennings serving as the probable starting pitcher.

Ust, who did not play in Saturday’s opener, drew the start at third base in Sunday’s action and responded with a 1-for-3 game, with one strikeout and one fielding assist. Notre Dame freshman righthander Aaron Heilman (Logansport, Ind.) has yet to pitch for Team USA.

Clemson sophomore righthander Ryan Mottl picked up Sunday’s win after rolling up nine strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs on four hits and one walk over six innings.

Team USA broke open a 2-2 game with a four-run fourth, behind a three-run home run by Cal State Fullerton sophomore shortstop Ryan Owens and consecutive doubles by Florida State freshman rightfielder Matt Diaz and California freshman second baseman Xavier Nady.

Nady tripled home Owens in the sixth for a 7-2 lead before Team USA closed the scoring with three runs in the ninth.
