Three Named Hobey Baker Candidates

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Hobey Baker Memorial Award committee announced the 2023 candidates for the award, given annually to the top NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey student-athlete. The 2023 honorees include three Irish icers as Nick Leivermann, Trevor Janicke and Ryan Bischel were all named among the nominees.

The first round of voting is now open and fans can vote once per day from now until March 5. The top-10 will be announced on March 15 with the Hobey Hat Trick finalists being named March 30, ahead of the NCAA Frozen Four.

A graduate student from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Leivermann has appeared in 18 games for the Irish, tallying 13 points off five goals and eight assists. His 13 points leads all ND defensemen and is third on the team.

Now in his fifth season with the Irish, Leivermann has donned the Blue and Gold sweater in 136 games, while recording 71 points in 22 goals and 49 assists.

Named an alternate captain ahead of the 2022-23 season, T. Janicke has proven valuable for the Irish at both ends of the ice this season. The senior from Maple Grove, Minnesota, has appeared in all 24 games for ND this season and leads the team in both points (16), goals (seven) and assists (nine).

T. Janicke has had a career season in 2022-23, tying his previous best in goals (two) as the Irish topped Wisconsin earlier in the month. He also recorded an assist in the victory for a career-high three points (2-1-3). With five weeks remaining in the regular season, T. Janicke is currently on pace to break his previous season-high 24 points, recorded in his junior year. In four seasons at Notre Dame, T. Janicke boasts 130 games played with 63 points (34-29-63).

Bischel has been named B1G Third Star of the Week on three occasions this season, having most recently picked up the honor following a career-best performance at Penn State, Jan. 20-21. The senior out of Medina, Minnesota, stopped a career-high 52 shots in ND’s 2-1 win over the Nittany Lions in game one of the weekend series, before following it up with 42 saves the following night for a two-game total of 94 saves on 98 shots faced. Bischel now ranks first among netminders with 824 saves in 2022-23, while his .928 save percentage is fifth nationally.
