Tommy Vail Named ACC Pitcher of the Week

Sophomore left-hander earned a win and save last week

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced their weekly players of the week Monday afternoon and Notre Dame sophomore Tommy Vail was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week. Vail is the first Irish hurler to earn ACC Pitcher of the Week honors since Michael Hearne earned the nod on April 25, 2016.

The left-hander from Seattle, Wash. led the Irish with 7.2 innings pitched over three appearances against Northwestern and Pitt. Vail only allowed one run and one hit over the 7.2 innings while striking out 11.

Vail got his second start of the season against Northwestern and he tossed a career high five innings. After allowing a hit in the first inning, Vail retired the final 14 batters he faced and ended the outing with six strikeouts and no walks.

On the road over the weekend, Vail made two appearances against the Panthers. He did not allow a hit while striking out three in the opening game of the series. Then in the rubber match, Vail got the final five outs of the game without allowing a hit and recorded his third save of the season.
