Three Swimmers; Four Divers Qualify For Thursday Championship Finals

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – In the morning session of day two at the 2013 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday, three University of Notre Dame women’s swimmers qualified for the night’s championship finals, while four divers placed in the top eight of the prelims for the 1-meter discipline.

Qualifying for championship swims were Gracie Fredlake (500 free), Emma Reaney (200 IM) and Christen McDonough (50 free).

On the boards, Jenny Chiang looks to claim her first 1-meter crown as she qualified first for the finals with a score of 293.45 points. Also qualifying were Lindsey Streepey (4th-277.60), Allison Casareto (5th-262.55) and Emma Gaboury (7th-255.40).

Fredlake took seventh in the 500 free, turning in a time of 4:50.87 to advance to the finals. Representing the Irish in the 500 free consolation finals will be senior Jaime Malandra (15th-4:55.08) and sophomore Bridget Casey (16th-4:55.47).

Reaney came out strong in the morning session of the 200 IM, blowing past her heat competitors in a time of 1:57.64 to lock up the top spot in the evening’s championship finals. Qualifying for the consolation finals were a trio of Irish competitors. Senior Lauren Scott finished 13th in 2:04.81, freshman Genevieve Bradfod took 14th in 2:04.84 and sophomore Melissa Scott placed 15th in 2:04.93.

McDonough finished seventh (23.26) in the splash and dash to qualify for Thursday’s championship final. Competing in the consolation finals will be freshman Catherine Galletti, who went 23.51 in the prelims to take 11th.

The evening session gets underway at 6 p.m. with the consolation finals of the 500 free.
