Three Irish Selected In The First Round Of The 2022 MLS SuperDraft

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – For the first time in program history, three players were selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft. Notre Dame men’s soccer standouts Mohamed Omar, Philip Quinton and Jack Lynn were each selected in the opening round on Tuesday afternoon.

The three selections extend the total number of Notre Dame MLS picks to 42 in program history (first selection came in 1997), including 27 players that have been chosen during the draft’s opening two rounds (13 in the first round).

Lynn was taken 18th overall by Orlando City SC followed by Omar going 23rd to the Colorado Rapids. Quinton was then selected 25th overall by the Columbus Crew.

Lynn led the Irish attack for the majority of his four-year career, scoring 31 goals and adding eight assists to lead all Notre Dame players during that time frame. The senior became just the 12th player in program history to reach the 30-goal milestone in a career.

The forward saved his best season for last, scoring 10 goals and adding four assists en route to being named a United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American. Lynn also earned back-to-back All-ACC First Team selections, becoming the third Notre Dame player to accomplish the feat. Lynn was also named to the 2021 ACC All-Tournament Team after helping lead the Irish to their first ACC Championship title in program history.

Omar was a captain on the 2021 Fighting Irish squad and played a major role in the team’s historic season which included the first ACC Championship title in program history and the second ever appearance in the College Cup.

Omar played central midfield for Notre Dame over his four years, making 55 starts and playing in 69 matches. Omar finished his career with six goals, four coming in his senior campaign. The Toronto native also added three assists over his four seasons at Notre Dame.

Quinton anchored the Irish defense as a center back and was a captain during the 2021 season. The senior picked up a number of honors and awards following his prolific season as he was named TopDrawerSoccer Postseason Best XI First Team, CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American, 2021 ACC All-Tournament Team and 2021 All-ACC Third Team.

The Portland native helped spark Notre Dame’s postseason run, as the team allowed just two goals over eight postseason matches. Quinton helped lead the Irish to the ACC title, as the defense didn’t allow a single goal over four matches. The center back also scored two goals during the 2021 season.

Notre Dame head coach Chad Riley has now had 12 players selected in the MLS SuperDraft that played under his direction during his time as a head coach.
